Get Out of My Namespace
by Jeremy at 12:20 pm EST, Mar 21, 2004

You don't own your name. The world is running out of names. Rules are up for grabs.

"It's a kangaroo court. They seem to change the rules on the fly."

Drug companies spend millions on market research to make sure their names are both serious and sexy.

Occasionally, desperation can lead to brilliance.

In a complex world, the simplest words are the most oversubscribed.

"The more we stray into the territory of naming systems and geography, the more we realize the illogicality."

Cyberspace and globalization represent ... a sea change in the scale of modern society.

The vast majority of trademark applications used to be rejected; now the opposite is true.

Namespaces will collide. Let them.

OK, I finally broke down and registered with the NY Times to be able to read most of Jeremy's intriguing sounding posts and , man, this was a good one to start with!

My own family business tried to register "A True Bagel is Boiled, Then Hearth Baked" and we got a mighty strong cease-and-desist letter from one of the huge multinationals like General Foods or Nabisco or someone, makers of "Country Hearth Bread" you find in the grocery store.

This is what I've been saying all along: as "convenient" as unique
namespaces seem to be, they are a disaster in situations
where there's no "real-world" top of the hierarchy for the arbiter to sit upon. This is exactly what we have with WIPO, ICANN, etc.

The best unique ID is a big random number, i.e. a key.

There is a redundant post from Rattle not displayed in this view.
