Kerry campaign files FEC complaint against TV ads
by k at 2:13 pm EDT, Aug 23, 2004

] The John Kerry presidential campaign has filed a
] complaint with the Federal Election Commission alleging
] the veterans' group behind an anti-Kerry TV ad was
] illegally coordinating its efforts with the Bush-Cheney
] campaign.

[ I don't think this is a good way to go, really. There doesn't seem to be enough hard evidence of collusion or coordination here to warrant it and it makes Kerry look like a whiner, which is a silly epithet, but people are fickle enough to vote based on things like that.

Kerry shouldn't be vulnerable on this issue, at least not against Bush, whose records are still incomplete, but running to the FEC like this will make some people think he's trying to unfairly silence his opponents free speech. I think it's gonna do more harm than good. -k]

I've been wondering about this. At first I thought it was stupid because he took this rumbling by an obviously partisan internet group that few people cared about and hauled it onto the front page.

Then I was thinking that as these swift boat veterans were discredited that they might discredit others on the right by association.

Now I think that Bush won. The linked article explains why:

President Bush tells reporters Monday that Sen. John Kerry served admirably in Vietnam.

Not only does this put the question to rest, but Bush ends up looking like the better man for being able to respect his opponent.

I'm calling it: Bush wins attack ad debate

I don't give much of a crap what Kerry did in Vietnam, but I don't like to see any veteran that made it through with an honorable discharge go through hell years later about it. The whole thing is disgraceful. This is already one dirty race.

I agree that filing with the FEC is the wrong approach. In my opinion, Kerry should bring up the Bush AWOL issue again. Where was Bush during those months in Alabama? For that matter, why didn't Bush volunteer to serve in Vietnam? It's amazing that the Republicans would voluntarily make an issue of Vietnam service, given Bush's history.

As Kerry keeps saying -- I love that it's become a trademark Kerry line, ironically criticizing Bush's initial use of it -- "Bring It On".

[The point is turn these swift boat ads into a win-win situation for Kerry & Co. It is left as an exercise to the reader to decide if this strategy has worked. --timball]
