Freaknic

Was curious about Freaknic (with an F) and did a google image search. Found this picture from 1998.

For those living in ATL, was it really so dicey that the cops had to walk around with GUNS DRAWN? Sheesh...

Dicey? I never found it Dicey. Used to enjoy watching the pimped out cars. Annoying? Yes. You couldn't drive where you wanted to drive. But never dicey. There are characters in downtown atlanta who are 1000 times more sketchy then a bunch of drunk frat brothers. I'm sure like any big event involving thousands of young, drunk people violence and crime occurred, but this image is intentionally misleading. Black and white photograph of faceless cops with their guns drawn over random african americans in the background evokes images of the race riots in the 60's. It feels confrontational. It wasn't. This image is out of context. In fact, in later years the cops did a fairly good job of managing things so that people could cruise and have fun without fucking up the neighborhoods.

I'm sure I could get you a picture of cops with their guns drawn in panama city on spring break. I doubt it would prompt a similar question. On the other hand, it always annoyed me that there was the big freakn' party going on right outside my dorm and I wasn't really welcome to join in.

That's good to hear, I figured it was probably out of context, but there was so much mystery behind "The Wildest Party In The South" I just wondered.
