MemeStreams Update
by Decius at 6:53 pm EDT, May 30, 2005

I just posted a code update, which clears up some minor annoyances with the recommend function.

1. Escapped unicode characters in html selected by the bookmarklet should now be handled properly.

2. When you click recommend in the site there is no longer a pop-up.

3. You can now include HREF links in your posts. Standard html format.

Let me know if there are any problems.

This is a test. I'm curious to see what happens when I reply to an entry that has a link. When you're editing your reply, it looks as though the quoting close-brackets will end up in the middle of the anchor tag. Is this disruptive? Does it screw up the look of the quoting?

This feature is a Good Thing. I was curious to see what would happen when I replied to an entry with an anchor tag, because the close-bracket of the auto-quoting system got mixed up in the middle of the tag. It seems to get cleaned up on the server side, though.

Well, I've noticed one significant thing so far. I am unable to edit any of my existing entries. I get an HTTP 500 server error.

Yup, I've tried to reasonably handle that scenario. There may be odd circumstances that don't work well. Let me know.

The quoting system may change in the near term.

!!ACK, sorry, I checked in a fix.

Oooh, nice! :)

I tested a few sections, and have the following comments:

- Embedded hyperlinks are working great. :)

- I like the new thread format where I can easily see who posted each message.

- For the escape characters, they're still showing up incomprehensible in some of my earlier memes, though if I try re-memeing the troublesome pages, I'm getting much better results.

- There are still some characters that aren't processing properly. For example, if I try to meme something in Polish, I'm getting about half the characters coming through okay, but I'm also getting odd boxes and other problems with some of the other letters. For an example, try meme-ing the first paragraph on this page from the Vatican website.

- Overall, great changes! I'm pleased.

Elonka :)

I didn't go through and clean out the database. It should be better going forward.

I played with this a bit this morning. I'll find some time soon to look at it in more detail and I'll let you know...
