Steve Irwin (Crocodile Hunter) Dead - Killed by Stingray
by skullaria at 12:41 pm EDT, Sep 4, 2006

Some people say he was a 'victim' of 'animal voyeurism' tv.

What kind of spin is that?

Steve Irwin was a great guy - most of his money went to funding conservation efforts and a wildlife rehabilitation center. He loved animals and was a tremendous conservationist.

He was not some new fangled whim of pop culture - he WAS a terrific conservationist and educator, and this family admired him very much.

We are saddened that he is dead.

Perhaps my husband put it best (although rather coarsely)when he said:
"If Tony Blair or Bush died, I'd not give a shit, but Steve Irwin was one of the GOOD GUYS and this just blows."

That sums it up fairly well.

When I first started seeing Crocodile Hunter stuff coming out, I thought "great, some bloke who thinks he's god's gift to the world, out to make some money being "extreme" and over the top." However, I always like to watch and see if my first impression is wrong, and it was. From the get go, it was obvious not only how much this man cared and loved animals, but how intelligent and experienced he was with them.

If you ever watch the shows and the man with any attempt at neutrality, what quickly becomes apparent is he always knew where the animals were and what they were doing, and he knew his stuff about animals. He never intentionally antagonized or ever tried to harm animals or their environment. What started out as skepticism based off a commercial, quickly turned into a decade of respect for the man and his work. Plus, he provided my kids with such great knowledge, in a fun manner, that he will never be forgotten.

This is quite sad. My kids were saddened as well. We'll miss him as a family and what he brought to the world of animals, conservation, and goodness in general.
