Delicious Library
by Abaddon at 7:50 am EDT, Oct 8, 2006

so I went to watch one of my movies today and I found it missing...I poll all the people who I know have borrowed movies from me, no-one seems to know where it is...that pisses me off..so I finally got this program to archive all my books and dvds, it'll set due dates and shit and remind me to kill people for not bringing things back...

anyways, I know its been posted on memestreams before, but its pretty rad software...check it out...

I'm sure it's cool software, but... what the fsck is that masthead graphic on their website about? 8-bit clouds rain (or perhaps, bombard with missiles) on a field and a city sprouts, then some crazy flowers? Weeeeeird.

Catalog your books, movies, music, software, toys, tools, electronics, & video games.

When we demo Delicious Library to people, about ⅔ of them instantly say this:

“Wait, I just hold a CD or DVD or video game or book or whatever up to my webcam, and it magically reads the UPC and downloads that item’s cover and all pertinent information about it, and displays all my stuff on photorealistic shelves? I’ll take it! Right now! This is why I bought a computer in the first place! ”

But a few people are skeptical, or slightly less obsessive. “Ok,” they say, “then I have my stuff in my computer. Big whoop. I can just look at my real shelf, right now, for free.”

I love this software because it's exactly what software should do. Be novel and useful. It makes something that is tedious and aggravating and makes it easy and gives you power. Despite this, and having over 1000 books and something like 1300 ceedees, I don't buy it because, well... I'm in the second camp.

I guess what I'd really like to say is "why doesn't something like this exist for your health records? or car maintenance? or your finances?" Isn't this what technology and the power of the web supposed to do? Enable us to be incredibly effective?
