I wonder - if maybe they've got it a bit wrong - if the parallel universes are NOT US. It would explain everything - why some people see ghosts, and others don't, some sense God - others don't. :) If we all have almost nearly all the same rules, but just a variance here and there...we're just milimeters apart, but we are separate.

I'm not a mathmatician, but I think the separation of the different universe is the separation of our own consciousnesses.

Anyway it works for me. :)
