Is Your Son a Computer Hacker?
by Elonka at 12:41 pm EDT, Apr 21, 2003

] To this end, I have decided to publish the top ten signs
] that your son is a hacker. I advise any parents to read
] this list carefully and if their son matches the profile,
] they should take action. A smart parent will first try to
] reason with their son, before resorting to groundings, or
] even spanking. I pride myself that I have never had to
] spank a child, and I hope this guide will help other
] parents to put a halt to their son's misbehaviour before
] a spanking becomes necessary.

Before reacting to this piece, I advise reading all of it very carefully and thoroughly. And especially check the embedded hyperlinks. My own reaction is that it's very clever satire, since it's far too well-researched to be as ignorant as it sounds (grin). But many of the people who replied to it seem to have very different opinions . . .

I don't know what's funnier, the article, or the idiots who thought it was real...

what a world! what a world!

Yeah, and the names of the family members are pretty much a dead giveaway. A family with six children? Wife's name is Carol? Son's name is Peter? Youngest child is Cindy? Heh.

It seems very stereotypical, indeed. Of course, those who are truly breaking the law and who have their wits about them know to keep their mouths shut.

Ok. I will be reading this since I have a son of my own and want to know what to signs to watch. On a more serious note, I strive hard everyday to talk about hacking with my kids (yes, plural). See, there is a show on PBS which actually looks pretty good. It is called cyberchase [http://pbskids.org/cyberchase/]. The problem is my kids were running around saying "oooo.. Hacker, you're going to jail". Well, the wife and I decided we should have a talk with them. They now have a different attitude. Anyways, back to the topic. My poor kids have a hacker father. That means, for them to do whatever it is kids want to do with MY internet connection or computers, they are going to have to be better than me. I can't wait for that day. I will be so proud.

I love good satire! This was my best laugh in weeks.
