Microsoft wants your cellphone
Topic: Technology 10:42 am EST, Nov 21, 2002

The software king has big plans for making the world of mobile phones safe for Windows. Can phone makers, and a little Norwegian company called Opera, stop the onslaught?

This is an interesting article on how Microsoft's restrictions both on licensing and the customizability of their cellphone OS are (for now) keeping them out of the beds of the big handset manufacturers. It's also good news for fans of the little guy, open source and Opera.

"No," von Tetzchner says pragmatically, "I don't believe that the best technology always wins."

Silicon hogs
Topic: Science 3:33 pm EST, Nov 13, 2002

The technology industry has been heralded as a clean alternative to smoke-belching industrial factories of yore, but in recent years, its squeaky-clean image has eroded with news reports about high cancer rates among clean-room workers, and old CPUs and monitors piling up in landfills.

Interesting read, especially since I was an uninformed consumer of what has certainly been called "clean technology."

Shit More Popular Than Technology
Topic: Technology 12:11 pm EST, Nov 12, 2002

A case of the law of large numbers coming into play? Hardly. In a neighborhood of 200 homes, only one on average has a TiVo. More U.S. homes have outhouses, 671,000, than TiVos, 514,000." Microsoft seems to think TiVo's business model is broken, after it tried to adopt the same model for itself. But oddly they continue with their Xbox.

Flag of inconvenience
Topic: Technology 10:42 am EST, Oct 31, 2002

Fearing the Taiwanese flag would irk China, Red Hat yanked it from its version of Linux -- and started an international geek uproar.

An interesting op-ed piece about how Open Source Software has slipped into the politics between Peoples Republic of China and Taiwan.

Every Public Record on your Home
Topic: Miscellaneous 11:59 am EDT, Oct  4, 2002

Just when you thought that you might be safe from stalkers and identity thieves, here comes a service with a free 3 day trial where someone can plug in your address and learn what you paid for it, how much your mortgage is, etc. Yes, this info has been around for ages, so it's not really anything new, but the fact that it doesn't even cost money to do is a little more upsetting.

Building the underground computer railroad
Topic: Technology 11:16 am EDT, Sep 23, 2002

Anti-globalization activists in Oakland, Calif., are recycling old machines, loading them with free software and shipping them off to Ecuador.

Neat story and a good illustration of how techno anarchists can chip in and help.

Now physicists at Middle Tennessee State University have broken that speed limit over distances of nearly 120 metres, using off-the-shelf equipment costing just $500.

Alright, go MTSU!

Big Trouble in the world of 'Big Physics'
Topic: Science 11:46 am EDT, Sep 16, 2002

Six months ago, Jan Hendrik Schön seemed like a slam dunk nominee for a Nobel prize. Then some of his colleagues started to take a closer look at his research.

Of course, I think the biggest shame is that the shady workings similar to Enron are making their way further and further into the world of scientific achievement. Obviously there have been faked studies in the past, but it seems that those quacks are aiming higher than ever.
