Seven hurt in punch-up at Church of the Nativity - Times Online

The cradle of Christianity was rocked by an unholy punch-up when Greek Orthodox and Armenian priests came to blows in a dispute over how to clean Bethlehem’s Church of the Nativity.

Merry Xmas, Jesus.

The Alameda-Weehawken Burrito Tunnel
Topic: Home and Garden 1:55 am EST, Jan  5, 2008

The story begins in any of the three dozen taquerias supplying the Bay Area Feeder Network, an expansive spiderweb of tubes running through San Francisco’s Mission district as far south as the “Burrito Bordeaux” region of Palo Alto and Mountain View. Electronic displays in each taqueria light up in real time with orders placed on the East Coast, and within minutes a fresh burrito has been assembled, rolled in foil, marked and dropped down one of the small vertical tubes that rise like organ pipes in restaurant kitchens throughout the city.

...

By the time they reach Cleveland the burritos are fully heated through and traveling uphill at about twice the speed of sound. A series of induction coils spaced through central Pennsylvania repeats the magnetic process in reverse, draining momentum from the burritos and turning it into electrical power (though Weehawken residents still recall the great blackout of 2002, when computers running the braking coils shut down and for four hours burritos traced graceful arcs into the East River, glowing like faint red sparks in the night).

The Nightmare Fall - TIME
Topic: Home and Garden 8:26 pm EST, Dec 12, 2007

"I'd see lightning. Boy, do I remember that lightning. I never exactly heard the thunder; I felt it. I remember falling through hail, and that worried me; I was afraid the hail would tear the chute. Sometimes I was falling through heavy water—I'd take a breath and breathe in a mouthful of water. Sometimes I had the sensation I was looping the chute. I was blown up and down as much as 6,000 feet at a time. It went on for a long time, like being on a very fast elevator, with strong blasts of compressed air hitting you."

Can the discovery of new fruit used in smoothies save the rainforest? | Food monthly | The Observer
Topic: Home and Garden 10:49 pm EST, Nov 18, 2007

At Fruit Towers, the playfully named headquarters of Innocent Drinks in west London, the destruction of the Amazon and the role of the ribeirinhos has not gone unnoticed. One of the company's best-selling fruit smoothies contains a small amount of pulped aai (ass-eye-ee), a berry that grows only within 25 yards of the Amazon's banks. To harvest it, the palm on which it grows does not have to be cut down; better still, it thrives in the shade of other rainforest trees such as rubber, Brazil nut, cabbage palm and miriti palm, encouraging growers to mimic nature rather than plant aai in endless regimented rows - the kind of monoculture that destroys biodiversity.

'We buy 300 tonnes of frozen pulp a year from our supplier, Sambazon,' says Richard Reed, co-founder of Innocent, 'and we're paying them 1,300 a tonne. That puts about 300,000 a year into those riverbank communities.'

In the Amazon, where 90 per cent of ribeirinho families survive on less than US$4 (1.90) a day, such shared income goes a long way. What's more, Sambazon guarantees to buy all the aai its suppliers produce, eliminating risk to the grower. It calculates the average daily market price, then adds a five per cent premium - which is why Sambazon's pulp (but not Innocent's smoothie) is certified by the US Fair Trade Federation. Sambazon pays cash up-front instead of making farmers wait, and buys direct from the grower to cut out middlemen. Organic, processed in a pristine new factory and fully traceable to the person who grew it, the aai used by Sambazon and Innocent typically fetches 44 reais (12) a sack compared to 15 reais five years ago.

Irrigated twice a day by the tidal waters of the Amazon, the aai tree requires little maintenance. Prune it occasionally and keep the grove free of weeds and disease, and it will keep producing fruit - eight to 12 baskets in two hours of picking, from a plot no bigger than a large suburban garden. If managed properly, an acre of rainforest will yield 14 tonnes of berries a year.

It is a high-income, low-impact crop for sure, but that is not the only reason it appears in Innocent's portfolio. Aai is also the ultimate superfruit, its reddish skin containing anthocyanins (plant chemicals that neutralise the 'free radicals' associated with disease and ageing) and other antioxidants. Weight for weight, aai contains 60 per cent more antioxidants than the acclaimed pomegranate, 2.7 times more than blueberries and over six times more than strawberries. Beneath its skin is a yellowish fat, making it rich in calories.

Cold Acai juice is like a fruit smoothy or a chocolate shake... but its better. So much better. Its loaded with fiber and protein so it congeals into... the best dessert I've ever had.

Anyone know where one can get this stuff stateside?

Miniature Cattle
Topic: Home and Garden 7:04 pm EDT, Sep 12, 2007

Welcome to our web page. We have a small acreage in north-central Iowa with about 40 head of miniature cattle of all ages. We bought our 1st miniature cattle back in 1993. Before we bought any we subscribed to lots of exotic animal magazines and made numerous phone calls. We had no idea what type of mini cattle were out there. We just started buying small and colorful little cattle.

These are so cool. I want a herd of miniature animals.

WERD in Atlanta

Jesse B. Blayton Sr.
became the first radio station in America to be owned by an African American when Jesse B. Blayton, a professor at Atlanta University and a bank president, bought it in 1949 and hired his son, Jesse Blayton Jr., as station manager. The 1,000-watt station, purchased for $50,000, was located in the Prince Hall Masons Grand Lodge at 334 Auburn Avenue.

Jesse Blayton Jr. hired veteran disc jockey Jack Gibson as announcer and replaced the rest of the all-white staff with black announcers. The station's "Four Horsemen"—Gibson, Joe Howard, Roosevelt Johnson, and Jimmy Winnington—played music and other programming of interest to black listeners. Gibson was a popular on-air personality, perhaps the city's leading disc jockey at the time. Blayton also hired Ken Knight as program director.

lodge that housed WERD was also home to Martin Luther King Jr.'s Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) during the 1960s. It has been said that King would bang on the ceiling with a broomstick when he wanted to make a public statement, and the WERD disc jockey upstairs would lower a microphone from the window above.

Blayton Sr. sold the station to white owners in 1968. He remained active in community affairs until his death on September 7, 1977, and was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 1995.

Every time I stay at a Hyatt, I sleep like baby. Like little happy baby. I slept last night as I have not slept in weeks. My god, it was glorious. I woke up 5 times in the night, and for once in my life, I was shocked at how refreshed I felt in relation to how much time was left until my 6:30AM wakeup call.

I ended up getting up at 5:30, because I didn't need more than 7 hour sleep. Suck was the quality of the sleep.

So it turns out you can buy anything in a Hyatt room, online. One of these, in King, will be mine. Oh yes... it will be mine.
