The blue and the green | Bad Astronomy | Discover Magazine
Topic: Arts 11:37 pm EDT, Jul  6, 2009

You see embedded spirals, right, of green, pinkish-orange, and blue? Incredibly, the green and the blue spirals are the same color. At first I thought Richard was pulling our collective legs, being a trickster of high magnitude. So I loaded the image in Photoshop and examined the two spirals. In the two squares displayed below, the one on the left is colored using the same color from the blue spiral, and on the right using the green spiral.

This is actually really cool!

You have to focus really hard on the lines of the "blue" spiral to see it's actually the same color as the green one. Unlike many optical illusions, it gets no easier to see it correctly after seeing it correctly the first time.

The zoomed in image from the article helps:

Carlin, who had a history of heart trouble, performed as recently as last weekend at the Orleans Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas.

Cheers!

Really, really cool optical illusion
Topic: Arts 6:57 pm EDT, Aug  5, 2007

Seriously. This is definitely above and beyond the usual. No crazy patterns, no violent blinkingness, no creepy face to spring out at you.

Go to the site, and check out the castle by putting your mouse cursor over the image. Notice that it's entirely black and white. Move your mouse pointer off to one side of the image. Now, just like it says, stare at the dot in the center for about 30 seconds, and don't move your head or look away. Relax your eyes even. Then without looking away, move the mouse pointer back into the image.

VIBRANT COLOR!

When you blink and it goes *pffT!* back to black and white is pretty trippy.

The Documentary Channel
Topic: Arts 1:42 pm EDT, Jun  6, 2007

We feel that the best documentaries are made by individuals not companies. That’s why we’ve created a home where the independent documentary filmmaker is always welcome.

We uniquely tap into the vast pool of documentaries that have been previously unviewed by the public. The Channel strives for the highest quality and seeks to air the personal works of the most talented documentary filmmakers.

We will show docs that are rare, edgy, personal, difficult in terms of subject matter, and "un-commercial".

I want this channel.

Free music? Priceless.
Topic: Arts 1:33 pm EDT, Jun  6, 2007

Of course, the music industry can exist only if free is a rare exception. But when free, concerts should be also free of peripheral promotion; at Town Hall, you didn't even see Lifschitz's compact discs sold in the lobby. Everyday life is full of promotional swindles, spam assaults, and advertisement-driven Malware. Art hasn't necessarily stayed clear of that. But here, it can - and does.

Free music? Priceless.

Graffiti Research Labs - Laser Painter
Topic: Arts 11:51 pm EST, Feb 21, 2007

This is truly awesome. The folks at Graffiti Research Labs created a rig that facilitates painting with light on the side of a building. It uses a high lumens projector to project the light, a green laser pointer to do the writing, and a security/astrononmy camera to detect where the green laser was pointed. They have made all the code available under the GPL.

Here is video of them using the rig via YouTube:

Long Video War Game Exposures
Topic: Arts 2:34 pm EST, Feb 19, 2007

A set of long exposures that were taken while playing video war games of the 80's, created by Atari, Centuri & Taito. The photographs were shot from video game screens while playing the games. By recording each second of an entire game on 1 frame of film, captured complex patterns were captured not normally seen by the naked eye.

Awesome. The included image is from Tempest. I could tell the second I saw it. Tempest is one of the coolest video games ever.
