BTW, this is why feds always advocate biometric technologies even though they aren't cost effective.

Be sure to read all of the text. I found this line particularly humorous:

It's Not Just the Internet - Almost no one pays for content in any medium. By Michael Kinsley
Topic: Miscellaneous 9:03 pm EST, Dec 10, 2002

economics are not, after all, suspended in cyberspace like the laws of gravity in outer space. Content needs to be paid for on the Web just as in any other medium. And it probably has to be paid for the same way most other things are paid for: by the people who use it. We tried charging the customers at Slate. It didn't work. Future experiments may be more successful, and we at Slate encourage others to jump in. We'll watch. But meanwhile, let's look again at this notion that in every medium except the Internet people pay for the content they consume. It's not really true.

Study: Marijuana May Not Lead to Hard Drugs
Topic: Society 12:17 am EST, Dec 10, 2002

] Casting doubt on a basic principle of U.S. anti-drug
] policies, an independent study concluded on Monday that
] marijuana use does not lead teenagers to experiment with
] hard drugs like heroin or cocaine.
]
] The study by the private, nonprofit RAND Drug Policy
] Research Center countered the theory that marijuana acts
] as a so-called gateway drug to more harmful narcotics, a
] key argument against legalizing pot in the United States.

Menstruation calendar
Topic: Miscellaneous 3:29 pm EST, Dec  9, 2002

] Mencal is a simple variation of the well-known unix
] command cal. The main difference is that you can have
] some periodically repeating days highlighted in color.
] This can be used to track menstruation (or other) cycles
] conveniently.

I'm not sure why I'm blogging this.

Proof that Valenti is wrong...
Topic: Intellectual Property 1:46 am EST, Dec  9, 2002

] "If that assumption is correct, then only 2,480 out of
] 36,386 titles from 1927-1946 are available, or 6.8%.
] 93.2% are commercially dormant."

While this result is hardly surprising, its important, because the Copyright club has argued that copyright protection for old works is the best way to ensure their distribution. Obviously, its not working very well.

This is the Mailing list ARChives at AIMS. I use it all the time. Just about every useful techie mailing list known is archived here. The interface is reasonable, the search engine is reasonable, and it's incredibly useful. Everything is here.
