Guns N' Roses: Still good for a riot
Topic: Music 5:31 am EST, Nov  8, 2002

Thousands of fans rioted for about an hour outside GM Place in downtown Vancouver last night after Axl Rose, the lead singer of Guns N' Roses, failed to appear for a concert.

It was to have been the first show of the rock band's North American leg of its Chinese Democracy World Tour. Guns N' Roses has a history of concert no-shows.

A band spokesman said poor weather conditions at Los Angeles airport made it impossible for Rose's plane to fly.

"That's it, I'm trashing all my GNR stuff," said fan Dana Claydon. "I've been waiting for this since '93 when Axl cancelled the last time. What a jerk."

Wow! I am taken back by this. Here we are, almost ten years later, and Guns N' Roses is still causing riots because Axl is pulling no-shows. This really amazes me.

Why?

Black Blague pops up in NYC
Topic: Current Events 9:27 pm EST, Nov  7, 2002

The big hysteria causing story in the NYC/NJ news today is the return of the infamous Bubonic Plague. It is currently reported to have been brought to town by a visiting couple from Mexico City. Sorry to let you down, no terrorist ties seem to exist at this point. The plague does not spread from person to person, so it is unlikely this will turn into a bigger problem. It is also extremely unlikely that these two cases could lead to the NYC rat population becoming infected, the primary carriers of the disease.

Between Anthrax and West Nile, it really does not take much to get people in this area on edge...

Thai Drug Hits California Rave Scene
Topic: Current Events 8:01 pm EST, Nov  7, 2002

Ilsundal: The newest drug to hit California's underground club scene is sweet, colourful - and deadly. The drug, a form of methamphetamine called ya ba, a Thai name meaning "crazy drug," has made its way into raves and is said to be significantly more powerful and dangerous than the current club drug of choice, ecstasy.

Rattle: This drug is a big problem in Thailand. With about the same frequency as highway car chases are televised in LA, hostage situations involving children and crazed people on ya ba are televised in Bangkok.

Y2K Bug Bites 105 Year Old
Topic: Technology 7:56 pm EST, Nov  7, 2002

Kinda scary that Norway hasn't fixed "Y2K" problems yet: "A 105 year old woman was offered a place in a Norwegian kindergarten after a millennium bug knocked a century off her age. "When our list showed she was born in '94' we just assumed it was 1994 rather than 1894," Olga Moerk, in charge of a project offering free day-care to five-year-olds in central Oslo, said on Friday." A social worker visited the old people's home where the woman lives after getting no reply to the free playschool offer.

StorageTek, Quantum To Unveil Tapeless Backup Systems
Topic: Computers 7:18 pm EST, Nov  7, 2002

] Disk-based backup systems are emerging as a new class of
] storage systems that will sit in an emerging tiered
] architecture consisting of primary online disks,
] disk-based backup systems and existing tape-drive
] subsystems for archival storage, Major said.

I'm glad to see more formal products using disk for backup are finally starting to hit the market. Anyone who has had to deal with backup in situations where restore/backup time matters, knows that disk is the only reasonable way to go. Tape is slow, and you need an admin around to coddle those nice big tape librarys that jam and need to be cleaned all the time... Its nice to see formal products are starting to appear to support the backup methodology that clued admins have been following for several years now.

HS Home 22.10.2002 - Myyrmanni: Net detectives found the bomber by themselves
Topic: Current Events 2:05 am EST, Nov  7, 2002

Petri Gerdt's name was circulating on the Net well before police released it to the media

By Kari A. Hintikka and Ossi Leander The after-shocks of the bombing at a Vantaa shopping mall on Friday 11th October have rocked the Internet, with calls for closer surveillance of message boards and counter- claims that the Net itself is not to blame, and in any event it is largely unpoliceable.

Less has been written about the way in which Internet-users carried out their own detective work in the hours and minutes following the fatal explosion. Message board members and chatroom users on IRC (Internet Relay Chat - see attached article for an explanation), operating under online aliases, put together crumbs of information and arrived at the name of the culprit well before either the police or the media was in a position to go public. This is the story of how it happened.

MegaTokyo: Piro goes it full-time
Topic: Arts 8:26 pm EST, Nov  6, 2002

] Ok, so. I am now doing Megatokyo full time. Technically,
] I now work for all of you. A lot of people have commented
] on how great it would be if I could ever quit my day job
] and do Megatokyo full time. Well, now we'll get to see if
] hey are right. First, lets talk about what will change
] around here, now that the site has my undivided
] attention.

I have blogged MegaTokyo before. I'm a big webcomic junkie.

It appears Piro got laied off from his job. Common problem among many people the past year or two, myself included. He is now trying to devote himself full-time to doing his webcomic.

I urge his users to support him. Running a website or any other creative envenour is a very hard, time consuming, and expensive thing to do. It takes a lot of energy and love. As you browse all those little websites out there you like, remember that we have to find a way for the community that visits these websites to fund their operation and development. Its the big challenge ahead of us if we do not want to be limited to big media that produces content solely for the lowest common denominator. Little media needs the support of its user community in order to function and grow.

MemeStreams is in a similar situation...

Remember: Feed your artists or you will have no art. Feed your coders, or you will have no code. MTV will be all you will have left in the end if you do not take it upon yourself to support the little e.
