local6.com - Technology - Possible Debris Spotted Falling From Shuttle
Topic: Space 4:53 pm EDT, Jul 26, 2005

NASA officials are analyzing video of a portion of Tuesday's shuttle launch "frame-by-frame" after one of several cameras aboard the craft captured what appeared to be pieces of debris separating from Discovery, according to Local 6 News.

I was going to comment yesterday about how InTrade doesn't have a futures market for a successful shuttle launch.. Now I think they should have one for a successful shuttle landing.

APOD: 2005 July 24 - A Chicago Meteorite Fall
Topic: Space 5:18 pm EDT, Jul 24, 2005

If you wait long enough, a piece of outer space itself will come right to you. As Colby Navarro worked innocently on the computer, a rock from space crashed through the roof, struck the printer, banged off the wall, and came to rest near the filing cabinet. This occurred around midnight on March 26 in Park Forest, Illinois, USA, near Chicago. The meteorite, measuring about 10 cm across, was one of several that fell near Chicago that day as part of a tremendous fireball. Pictured above is the resulting hole in the ceiling, while the inset image shows the wall dent and the meteorite itself. Although the vast majority of meteors is much smaller and burn up in the Earth's atmosphere, the average homeowner should expect to repair direct meteor damage every hundred million years.

The Best of Hubble
Topic: Space 6:04 am EST, Dec 21, 2004

This is not "news", but the download is worth waiting for, and the video is worth the time.

It's a Flash presentation of selected images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. If you liked the images of the Ultra Deep Field that were published back in March (and cited widely, including here), you'll probably like this, too. Whereas the UDF was a panoramic view, these are more like "close-ups", although the term takes on a rather new meaning when the scale is on the order of one light year to every four inches.

If anything, the pictures go by too fast..

Total Lunar Eclipse of October 28, 2004
Topic: Space 1:49 am EDT, Oct 28, 2004

I had no idea this was going on tonight. Luckily, I still caught it. The sky was clear too!

If you missed it, too bad. The next lunar eclipses visible in the Americas will be in 2007. One on March 3rd, which will only be a partial. One on August 28th, which will only be total for people on the west coast. The next total lunar eclipse visible in the Eastern United States will be on February 21, 2008.

Just one dumb thing I've been watching...
Topic: Space 10:08 am EST, Jan 24, 2004

On Google, for the keyword "rover".. Its almost number one.. Almost. Land Rover is the only thing left blocking it.

Update: Anyone notice what happened with the hostname there? That's cute.
