"To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Topic: Miscellaneous 7:21 pm EST, Jan  6, 2008

Scientists have identified a key mechanism necessary for bird flu to morph from a rare but deadly infection into a pandemic that could kill millions of people.

This is a very important find...with this kind of information, it may be possible to generate a preventative medication against pandemic flu.

Watch online ads.......for free magazines?
Topic: Business 7:16 pm EST, Jan  6, 2008

I'm putting this one under business - oh, it IS a freebie if anyone wants to check it out - right now if you watch some ads, you can get Popular Mechanics, Good Housekeeping, or ODE magazine.

But it is the CONCEPT that I find particularly interesting.

I was interested in ODE magazine, and so I thought, I'll watch these commercials, I have multiple monitor screens anyway. lol But I found that I really LIKED the commercials, and ended up even signing up for one website that was advertised. It was really, really, well targeted, you see.

Interesting concept.

Now, when I GET the magazine, they'll be more ads in it no doubt. ;)

Lakota Indians Declare Sovereign Nation Status
Topic: International Relations 1:24 am EST, Dec 24, 2007

I wonder why I haven't heard this anywhere? Is it just more evidence we all just ignore the indigenous Americans these days? Maybe it is just me. I'd have thought the mainstream news would cover something like this. They have the daily Britney after all.

Quote:
"Wednesday, December 19, a group that represents various reservations and states declared sovereign nation status and has withdrawn from all treaties with the U.S. government.

"For far too long our people have suffered at the hands of the colonial apartheid system imposed on the Lakota Sioux," a press release dated December 13 read, "Our treaties with the United States government are nothing more than worthless words on worthless paper - repeatedly violated in order to steal our culture, our land and our ability to maintain our way of life."

According to the organization, and the website www.lakotafreedom.com, Lakota men have a life expectancy of less than 44 years, the lowest of any country in the World, including Haiti. The infant mortality rate is 5x the U.S. Average and the Tuberculosis rate on Lakota reservations is approximately 800 percent higher than the U.S. national average. "

Officer removed from K-9 unit after police dog dies in car
Topic: Crime 5:42 am EST, Dec 21, 2007

This is bullcrap. He didn't lose his actual position, any rank, or any pay. His fine? $256.25 Cheaper than my last vet bill.

"ACWORTH, Ga. (AP) -- A police officer whose police dog died of heat stroke after being left in a patrol car has been charged with violating the city's cruelty to animals ordinance and removed from the K-9 unit.

Lt. Curtis Endicott also paid a $256.25 fine Thursday in municipal court, Acworth Police spokesman Capt. Wayne Dennard said."

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- New Yorker Alison Wilson was walking down Prince Street in SoHo last week when she heard a woman's voice right in her ear asking, "Who's there? Who's there?" She looked around to find no one in her immediate surroundings. Then the voice said, "It's not your imagination."
No, he's not crazy: Our intrepid reporter Andrew Hampp ventures to SoHo to hear for himself the technology that has New Yorkers 'freaked out' and A&E buzzing.

Indeed it isn't. It's an ad for "Paranormal State," a ghost-themed series premiering on A&E this week. The billboard uses technology manufactured by Holosonic that transmits an "audio spotlight" from a rooftop speaker so that the sound is contained within your cranium. The technology, ideal for museums and libraries or environments that require a quiet atmosphere for isolated audio slideshows, has rarely been used on such a scale before. For random passersby and residents who have to walk unwittingly through the area where the voice will penetrate their inner peace, it's another story.

This is going to make people psychotically angry.

I just posted this too - sorry for the dupe. OMG this should be illegal.
What will happen to the mentally ill people that hear this?
I don't like to be psychologically manipulated to this extent. ACK!

113 new cases of EBOLA reported in Uganda
Topic: Current Events 4:20 am EST, Dec 11, 2007

"KAMPALA (Reuters) - Uganda has 113 suspected cases of a new strain of Ebola fever that has killed 29 people, officials said on Monday, vowing to take the necessary steps to stop the virus spreading.

Ugandans fear the outbreak could mushroom into a major epidemic affecting the capital Kampala.

"We have an Ebola lab in Entebbe (near Uganda's international airport) where we are testing samples we took from suspected cases," Health Ministry spokesman Paul Kabwa said.

Some banks and supermarkets in the city issued their staff with protective rubber gloves for handling money they feared could be contaminated with the virus, which often causes victims to bleed to death through ears, eyes and other orifices.

My son's DOOM cartoon
Topic: Parenting 4:41 pm EST, Dec  8, 2007

My son is 11. One has to keep that in mind. He loves doing animation.
I found this flash movie he did last night and published it.

I am so glad that he IS homeschooled - he's a wonderfully compassionate boy who just happens to like...DOOM. I've been teaching him flash for the last year or so, but I was particularly enamored of this one - it is fairly fast to load, and he's done a great job with his sounds, which is something he's just starting to work with.

I have to wonder, if he were in 'regular' school, could he even show a teacher his animation without being labeled a potentially problematic child?
