Top 10 Censored News Stories of 2002-2003
Topic: Current Events 11:28 am EDT, Sep 13, 2003

] Researchers at Sonoma State meticulously combed through
] news reports from 2002 and the first quarter of 2003 to
] find stories that didn't get the media attention they
] deserved. This year's big stories include the attack on
] civil liberties at home, Donald Rumsfeld's plan to
] provoke terrorists, and treaty-busting by the United
] States.
]
] In many cases, these stories got little or no play %u2013
] or else were presented piecemeal, without any attempt to
] put the information in context.
]
] "The stories this year reflect a clear danger to
] democracy and governmental transparency in the U.S.
] %u2013 and the corporate media's failure to alert the
] public to these important issues," Project Censored
] director Peter Phillips told the Bay Guardian. "The
] magnitude of total global domination has to be the most
] important story we've uncovered in a quarter century."

U.S. refuses judge's order in Moussaoui trial
Topic: Current Events 8:17 pm EDT, Sep 11, 2003

] Tempting the judge presiding over the Zacarias Moussaoui
] trial to dismiss the case, federal prosecutors said
] Wednesday they will not cooperate with her latest order
] to permit two top al Qaeda captives to testify on
] Moussaoui's behalf.
]
] "The government cannot, consistent with the interests of
] national security, comply with the court's order,"
] prosecutors said in papers filed with U.S. District Judge
] Leonie Brinkema in Alexandria, Virginia.
]
] Moussaoui, 35, a French citizen of Moroccan descent and
] the lone U.S. defendant in connection with the September
] 11 terror plot, maintains that he had no role in the
] attacks, but admits belonging to al Qaeda, the Islamic
] terrorist group behind them.

Nice... Yea I know - Moussaoui is a self-professed piece-of-shit al Qaeda, but "innocent until proven guilty". And he should be allowed to call ANYONE as a witness. "interests of national security" my ass - the Bush administration is gonna play that card any time they don't want to cooperate or are feeling "holier that thou".

This judge deserves a medal for trying to be fair and unbiassed.

Dean's army goes offline
Topic: Society 9:00 am EDT, Sep 10, 2003

Are blogs the next White Man's Club? This article focuses on how the Dean Campaign has become self-aware that despite the fact that they have garnered incredible support... despite the fact that Howard Dean has a lot of appeal to minorities, the people showing up at the support meetings are DOMINANTLY white. Anecdotally speaking,
there are stories of there being one black person at a meeting.

Is having the time to look up political candidate web pages a luxury of whites? More like a luxury of the white collar worker. Most of the people that I know who go to the library for their internet access couldn't care less about politics, white or not, but they all do share one thing in common - they can't afford a computer and internet access at home.

"PLEASE stop having Meetups at cute white middle-class cafes where everyone looks like you! Each meetup should be scheduled in a place where the people walking by and wondering what's going on are from demographic groups that are harder to reach -- namely, either minorities or the elderly. EVERY retirement home has a meeting room. Have your meetups THERE. Is it sexy? No, but it will reach a group that is eager to be a part of the process. Have your meetups in restaurants in the Hispanic part of town or whatever other group you need to reach. Make the Meetup ITSELF work for you, instead of going there and THEN talking about what to do ...!"

Josh's post illustrates how astute many of Dean's supporters are about what it will take to get their man into the White House next year. Even though Dean is now thought of as the Democratic front-runner, many in his online community are constantly chiding each other not to become complacent about the task ahead. The danger that supporters appear most wary of is "preaching to the choir" -- bringing the pro-Dean message only to folks who are already inclined to accept it. Indeed, Richard Hoefer calls this the biggest pitfall of Dean's blog strategy. "I've been at odds with Dean for America because I criticize them for being too blog-centric," he says. "I think they preach to the converted, and it bugs me because I think they're missing the boat. I think Dean has incredible appeal to blacks, Latinos, minorities -- but the message hasn't gotten out there yet because they have been too focused on the blog."

Seattle Post-Intelligencer: Espresso lovers protest proposed tax
Topic: Miscellaneous 9:53 pm EDT, Sep  7, 2003

] About 200 people - coffee roasters, espresso bar owners
] and ordinary caffeine lovers - staged a protest against a
] proposed espresso tax on Sunday.
]
] "I'm here on behalf of my wholesale customers who cannot
] afford this unfair tax," said Neal Brown, wholesale
] director for Zoka Coffee House in the city's Green Lake
] neighborhood.
]
] Initiative 77 would add a 10-cent tax to espresso drinks,
] raising money for preschool and day care programs. The
] measure is up for a vote on Sept. 16 in Seattle.
]
] Supporters say I-77 could raise more than $6.5 million a
] year. A City Council staff estimate puts the benefit at
] between $1.8 million and $3.5 million annually.
]
] "They see the espresso business as some sort of cash cow
] to be milked for this particular issue," Brown said
] Sunday. "The next thing, who knows what? They'll be
] taxing orange juice for another issue."
]
] A coalition of business owners, led by Seattle-based
] coffee retailer Starbucks, is fighting the tax.
]
] Calling the protest their version of the Boston Tea
] Party, demonstrators marched from Zoka to Green Lake,
] where they dumped burlap bags into the water.
]
] They looked like coffee bags, but were filled with
] balloons to keep them from sinking so they could be
] retrieved after the protest, said Susan Majerus, who
] helped organize the demonstration.

Only in Seattle.

]
] Lord and his colleagues, who produced infrasound with a

]
] "Some scientists have suggested that this level of sound
