Super Mario Bros.' 25th: Miyamoto Reveals All
Topic: Games 11:22 pm EDT, Oct 28, 2010

It's the NES's silver anniversary this month, yes, but it also happens to be the 25th birthday of Super Mario Bros., the game that arguably did more than any other NES title to ensure that Nintendo's fledgling system would be a runaway success.

Shigeru Miyamoto, designer of SMB and a couple dozen other Nintendo titles you might be familiar with, sat down with Famitsu magazine in this week's issue to share some behind-the-scenes development tales from the NES's flagship title.

Compared to slaying dragons or building civilizations, figuring out the shape of a protein doesn’t sound particularly thrilling. But turn the task into an online game, replete with the competition and camaraderie of “World of Warcraft,” and the masses will come.

Right Wing Watch: The Dangers of Auto-Replace
Topic: Games 3:42 pm EDT, Jul  8, 2008

In addition to blocking traffic from websites they don’t like, it looks like the web-geniuses behind the American Family Association’s OneNewsNow site have a few other tricks up their sleeves, such as automatically replacing any use of the word “gay” with the word “homosexual” in any of the AP stories they run … leading to instances in which proper names are reformatted to meet their ridiculous standard, such as this article about sprinter Tyson Gay winning the 100 meters at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials in which he is renamed “Tyson Homosexual”:

Takara Tomy's RPG Piggy Bank: level up by saving up - Engadget
Topic: Games 12:43 pm EDT, Jun 21, 2008

Now here's a novel concept. Takara Tomy's BankQuest is half piggy bank, half old school RPG. Essentially, gamers / penny pinchers can purchase items to help them fend off pixelated ogres and the like by saving more money. The more coinage that gets deposited, the better the journey becomes. So, do you get some kind of prize when you cash it all out to buy your mum something nice, or what?

Human Augmentation: Augmented Human May Compete in Beijing Olympics
Topic: Games 9:48 am EDT, May 28, 2008

Last year South African sprinter Oscar Pistorius blew people's minds when he came in second in a 400-meter footrace in Rome...without feet. Pistorius is missing the lower part of both his legs, and ran on two carbon-fiber "Cheetah" leg prostheses. A lawsuit followed (of course), and Pistorius was banned from international racing. But Pistorius appealed, enlisting the help of human augmentation guru Hugh Herr of MIT to dissect the argument that his Cheetah's gave him an unfair advantage in the race. Last week the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld the appeal giving Pistorius the right to compete in this summer's Olympics in Beijing.

Yeah... an advantage, right...

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - Hiding a ring in a bouquet just wasn't enough when a computer programmer decided to pop the question.

Bernie Peng reprogrammed Tammy Li's favorite video game, "Bejeweled," so a ring and a marriage proposal would show up on the screen when she reached a certain score.
