Topic: Current Events 10:48 pm EDT, May  6, 2003

Sooo, what's it like withdrawing $1,000,000,000? I get nervous if I ask to cash a $500 check.

Returned space crew lucky, others faced wolves
Topic: Technology 11:49 pm EDT, May  5, 2003

] Eleven years before that, two cosmonauts overshot their
] touchdown site by 2,000 miles and found themselves deep
] in a forest with hungry wolves. That's when Russian space
] officials decided to pack a sawed-off shotgun aboard
] every spacecraft.

So we've all heard about the 300 mile mistake now. But I couldn't pass up this "low-tech" bit. It should be titled "When technology just isn't good enough, there's always a shotgun".

Searchers find live worms in shuttle wreckage - Apr. 30, 2003
Topic: Technology 9:59 pm EDT, Apr 30, 2003

So let me get this straight. NASA can build a container strong enough to withstand a massive explosion and heat, protecting the fragile life of worms but, still manages to lose astronauts due to seals and foam tiles... wow

Is Your Son a Computer Hacker?
Topic: Humor 1:52 pm EDT, Apr 23, 2003

] To this end, I have decided to publish the top ten signs
] that your son is a hacker.

Ok. I will be reading this since I have a son of my own and want to know what to signs to watch. On a more serious note, I strive hard everyday to talk about hacking with my kids (yes, plural). See, there is a show on PBS which actually looks pretty good. It is called cyberchase [http://pbskids.org/cyberchase/]. The problem is my kids were running around saying "oooo.. Hacker, you're going to jail". Well, the wife and I decided we should have a talk with them. They now have a different attitude. Anyways, back to the topic. My poor kids have a hacker father. That means, for them to do whatever it is kids want to do with MY internet connection or computers, they are going to have to be better than me. I can't wait for that day. I will be so proud.

Court blocks security conference talk | CNET News.com
Topic: Civil Liberties 12:57 am EDT, Apr 15, 2003

] A pair of students were blocked by a federal court from
] presenting information at a Georgia security and hackers'
] conference on how to break into and modify a university
] electronic transactions system.

] "The temporary restraining order pointed out that the
] irreparable injury to Blackboard, our intellectual
] property rights and clients far outweighed the
] commercial speech rights of the individuals in
] question," said Michael Stanton, a Blackboard spokesman.
]
] The company claims that the speech being blocked is
] commercial speech because the students were a "small
] competitor" to Blackboard. One of the students,
] Georgia Institute of Technology's Billy Hoffman, had
] threatened to give away code allowing any computer to
] emulate Blackboard's technology, the company claims.

] Although an initial cease and desist letter sent to the
] Interz0ne conference organizers hinted that the students
] may have violated the DMCA, the complaint that resulted
] in the temporary restraining order did not touch on that
] copyright law.
