What's in your Bottled Water?
Topic: Society 9:35 am EDT, Aug 29, 2003

] The message is clear: Bottled water is "good" water, as
] opposed to that nasty, unsafe stuff that comes out of the
] tap. But in most cases tap water adheres to stricter
] purity standards than bottled water, whose source -- far
] from a mountain spring -- can be the parking lot of an
] industrial facility in New Jersey. Forty percent of it
] began life as, well, tap water.

Flying J Travel Plazas, now with Wifi
Topic: Travel 7:18 am EDT, Jul 14, 2003

I'm blogging from somewhere around Wytheville, VA thanks to FlyingJ's new Wifi service. I have a power inverter, so I've just been leaving my laptop on running MacStumbler. Its a great way to catch truck stops with net access.. You get about as much notice as with a really tall sign.

$1 for 15 min, $1.95 for an hour, $4.95 a day, etc.. Not too bad.

Making lousy time.. After I was about an hour away from where I was staying in Jersey, I had to turn around because I realized I forgot my glasses.. Couldn't find my tape adapter either, no mp3s in car.. Doh!

Nuclear Plant Electrical Workers Strike, Citing Job Reductions
Topic: Local Information 5:31 am EDT, May 25, 2003

] Electrical workers at the Oyster Creek nuclear power plant
] in central New Jersey have gone on strike, adding another
] woe to a troubled week for one of the nation's oldest
] nuclear-generating stations.
]
] The walkout, by 215 of the plant's 450 workers, started
] abruptly just before noon on Thursday after weeks of
] fruitless negotiations over old work rules, staff
] reductions and employee benefits.
]
] Two days before the strike, Oyster Creek was forced to
] stop producing electricity after a cable failure knocked
] out power to about half the plant's safety system,
] including security cameras, alarms, sensors, pumps and
] valves, according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
] Makeshift repairs restored the power, but Oyster Creek is
] barred from generating power until a new cable is
] installed, said Neil Sheehan, a commission spokesman.

Lots of activity around the plant today.. At least 150 people out picketing along with the normal crop of police cars, humvees, soldiers, machine guns, and big concrete barriers.

EPA's Whitman submits resignation letter
Topic: Current Events 6:06 am EDT, May 22, 2003

] Christie Whitman, sometimes cast as a lone voice on Bush
] environmental matters, announced Wednesday she will soon
] step down as administrator of the Environmental
] Protection Agency.
]
] In her resignation letter posted on the EPA's Web site,
] the former New Jersey governor cited a desire to spend
] more time with her family. Her resignation will be
] effective June 27.
]
] "I am proud of the work this agency has done and of the
] contributions it has made to the success of your
] administration," Whitman, 56, said in a letter addressed
] to President Bush and dated May 20. "... It has been a
] true honor to be able to lead this agency as it worked to
] implement the innovative, effective environmental
] policies to which you are so clearly committed." (Text of
] letter)
]
] Whitman is the most prominent woman to leave the
] administration.
]
] In a statement, Bush praised Whitman, saying she "served
] my administration exceptionally well."
]
] Environmentalists have long suggested Whitman was unhappy
] with the White House over several key environmental
] policies, but she has steadfastly said she was happy in
] her work.

SUUUURE she wants to spend more time with her family. Uh huh. Why is it that is ALWAYS the #1 excuse sighted when someone unexpectedly steps down from a post? /me thinks the truth is she just cant head an agency called the Environmental Protection Agency in an administration with such a shady environmental track record.
