Yup, I'm proud of Jared! His earlier book The Third Chimpanzee is a fascinating read too, if you get a chance. He goes over the near identical genetic makeup that humans and apes have, and then takes a really close look at the tiny 2% difference. The book analyzes how that miniscule amount could be responsible for all the obvious differences: Music, architecture, language, sexual behaviors, and on and on. Interesting stuff!

No way! I heard him talk last year at an Edge event in LA, I think Jeremy was there too. He told an amusing story about some tribesmen who put little bamboo poles on their phalluses to represent there mood. It might be long with feathers and decorations, or something more modest for an off day. It tied in somehow with Jaron Lanier's talk about post-symbolic communication.

Wow, mixing you and Jared and your Mom, what an interesting family you have. I bet the Thanksgiving dinner conversation is actually REALLY interesting! Soemone should make a short movie....

Heh, actually, with my family, the trick is getting everybody in the same city at one time. My mom might be off doing research in Croatia, my dad might be doing World Bank work in one of the "-ykistans", Jared's off talking to tribespeople in New Guinea, etc. We like seeing each other when it's possible, but the rest of the time it's more a case of walking into the house and asking, "So, who's actually here in the country right now?" ;)
