Frankly, I'm pretty doubtful of these numbers. I wonder if Scopes has a page on this?

Its almost certainly bullshit. Unfortunately the debunkers that I found are all loosely associated with the xeonphobic vdare site, and so I take them with a grain of salt too:

http://www.sq.4mg.com/stateIQ-income.htm is that site's equivalent table.

The main problem with this hoax data is its overly wide spread of IQ scores. Its ranking of states is partially accurate.

According to their data, the IQ spead is much smaller, but the general pattern is accurate. Bush states do have lower average IQs. Of course, they go on to say that the low average IQs of the South are probably caused by high black populations.

(1) That just brings into question the whole idea of whether these IQ numbers are useful. It's old news that good education is related to high IQ scores, implying that IQ isn't simply a measurement of intelligence, but is also affected by knowledge. Want to raise your IQ? Grow up in a wealthy school district.

(2) Obviously, I don't think Blacks are less intelligent, but if you take the sq.4mg.com table at its most superficial, the reason Southern states have low average IQs is because of the low scores of their most Democratic voters.

"There are...lies, damned lies, and statistics." -Mark Twain, who Attributed the quote to Benjamin Disraeli.
