TALLAHASSEE - Controversy over the Florida State University mascot intensified Tuesday as Gov. Jeb Bush condemned a new NCAA policy and university officials planned to meet in emergency session to discuss their next move.

"How politically correct can we get?" Bush told reporters Tuesday morning before a meeting of the state Cabinet. "To me, the folks that make these decisions need to get out more often."

...

"Over the last four years, we've received a variety of complaints from fans, coaches, officials, student-athletes, Native Americans and non-Native Americans that mascots on a war path or the way they're dancing (for example) perpetuates a negative stereotype that marginalizes this group of people," said Charlotte Westerhaus, the NCAA's vice president for diversity and inclusion.

I am with Bush on this one. This country has gone overboard with the political correctness.

But then again... If there were a sports team called "The Slaves" and had a mascot of a black guy in chains, It's easier to see the point the NCAA is trying to make. The historical american indian is a cartoon in the mindset of the country. The difference between "The Slaves" example and the American Indian though, is mostly in the intention of the imagery. When most people think indian, they think of the romanticized "Cowboy and Indian" type of figure rather than something thats meant to dehumanize. I don't think most people think irish people are really leprechauns because of sports teams (except for regis philbin maybe). If the indan teams name were "the drunken scalpers" i think they'd have a stronger case.
