As his 80th birthday approaches, Hugh Hefner is proud of his achievements. He shouldn't be.

"When I found the vault next door to Marilyn was available," he explained to the Daily Telegraph, "it seemed natural."

Since this opinion comes from a former speechwriter for the current resident of the White House, this doesn't surprise me at all. For fifty years, Hefner has worked for a repudiation of pretty much everything those people stand for.

The core of his arguement goes all the way to Hamlet saying, "There is more to heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." Sex is not evil. You can work in an office and it can be good. Women are not subservient. As vilified as he has been for doing a men's magazine, one of the hallmarks of Playboy has always been equality, from the boardroom to the bedroom.

Bluntly, Hugh Hefner has been far better for this country and the world than this speechwriter and the guy he used to write for. If he wants the plot next to Marilyn, there may be a few upset ex-husbands of hers, but it's as good a place as any.
