In evolution, Americans are big non-believers
by Acidus at 9:48 am EDT, Aug 13, 2006

In the U.S. only 40 per cent of adults believe whole-heartedly in evolution, while 39 per cent called it “absolutely false” in the 2005 survey...

The study's authors say that after decades of debate it seems the American public is more confused than ever on the issue of evolution. Over the past 20 years, the number of Americans unsure about their stand on evolution has tripled from 7 per cent in 1985 to 21 per cent in 2005.

Jon Miller, the professor who authored the study, said religious fundamentalism in the United States has fuelled skepticism in evolution.

“When you compare the U.S. to Europe, it's clear we're way out in right field by ourselves,” said Mr. Miller. “There is a different protestant movement in this country, one that often rejects science. It's different than that of Europe and certainly of Canada.”

“The Republicans have been taken over by religious conservatives,” he said. “Partly because of the fundamentalism, we have a more ideological politics than ever before. Now more than ever we're seeing the politicization of this issue and others like stem cells, the morning after pill and global warming. Republicans do it because it works.”

Mr. Miller said the results of the study are concerning and paint a grim portrait of American science education.

“It doesn't say anything very good about education here,” he said. “The findings should be of substantial concern to science educators in the United States because we've spent billions of dollars, we have a high percentage of young people going to college and taking science courses and yet we have a very ambivalent attitude on a subject that's a closed book almost everywhere in the world.

Simply Shocking.

Is it?

Is it a sign of weakness that I'm not shocked at all? Is it a sign that we're losing? Because, honestly, this shit doesn't surprise me at all anymore.

It doesn't even fuel my opposition engine anymore. All I feel is resignation. And depression, i guess. How do you counter this? Logic just doesn't work, because it's not logical in the first place. I simply don't know how to operate in a regime where logic doesn't help or, quite remarkably, hurts.

Maybe the democrats are like that overly logical man, who's having trouble with his girlfriend but can't figure out why. And he's making everything worse, not because he's a bad person, but because he doesn't grasp that the problem isn't one that can be handled through logical discussion. Logic can't solve emotional issues. He's frustrated and upset because she's "irrational", and she's having none of it because rationality isn't the point.

That's how I feel right now. I can't appeal to these people because I don't speak the right language. So I'm frustrated and upset, but I'm damn near the point of throwing my hands in the air because I can't deal with it anymore.

Maybe I'll go live in the desert or up a mountain. I'll be an ascetic, a hermit, and eschew all contact with these squirrelly and intractable issues until reason and logic can re-enter the vernacular.

In other words, Americans are getting dumber.

"Republicans do it because it works.”

Yes, it does work. However, it is extremely irresponsible for the aformentioned reason. These people have damaged the strength of our country and its future for their own personal ends.
