University of Alabama Still Hasn't Learned
by Catonic at 10:46 am EDT, Oct 5, 2006

UAB student Tamara Henderson recently became victim of CampusCard fraud.

“It’s just as though you dropped a wad of money. Nothing can be done,” an official told the UAB senior.

Henderson dropped her CampusCard at the university’s recreation center and discovered it was missing a few days later. She found out that nearly $75 in purchases had been made to the account at multiple campus locations, including the Commons on the Green, Blazer Cafe, Jazzman’s Cafe and the Rec Center’s juice bar. Henderson immediately deactivated the card but was told the university does not have the capability to apprehend the thief.

Nevertheless, a card identified as not belonging to the person using it will be confiscated by the cashier....

You'd think they would at least learn with the last incident that happened involving Virgil and Acidus... Heck, I might have to take a look at this to see what sort of authenication is going on. What's incredibly stupid about this mess is that a CampusCard is an ID card with a photograph of the owner on the front. Trust but verify, people... sheesh.

Don't have the capability or the inclination? I gotta believe that the campus security cameras around these locations could easily be reviewed and correlated with the times of the transactions to identify the theif or at least narrow it down to a very small set.

The security cameras deployed at the University of Alabama at Birmingham externally cover most buildings and parking lots. From what I have noticed of them I would imagine they compromise the largest survillence network in Birmingham, and are probably fed to the police department as well in some places. What I find astounding is that despite all of this and more, the student paper republishes the unversity's police department blotter, which often shows twelve hour gaps when vehicle have been stolen, or other items like wallets, computers, etc.
