Abstinence Only - Just Say No Fails Again
by Mike the Usurper at 11:54 am EDT, Apr 16, 2007

Citing the fact that the Institute of Medicine, the nation’s leading health authority, had called for the elimination of these programs back in 2000, Wagoner said: “Congress must now move to de-fund these programs. Anything short of eliminating these programs would be a dereliction of its duty to promote public health and protect young people in the era of AIDS”.

The final report is out. And it was snuck out the back door. Why? Because abstinence only is total crap. Doesn't work. Doesn't stop kids having sex. Doesn't stop STDs like the super-clap mentioned last week. Doesn't stop AIDS. Doesn't stop pregnancy. Basically it's sort of like slapping a bandaid (regular size) on a severed limb and saying, "see how well this works!"

Abstinence is a good idea, but you can either include the rest of reality with it or you're more useless than tits on a bull.

I never could understand why people wanted to stop kids from having sex. Sex is a natural really fun thing that people DO. Why not just teach about the risks and how to mitigate them? - Teach about the consequences of careless sex - instruct about the emotional, Physical (stds) and reproductive aspects - and about birth control, and perhaps even a bit of instruction about how to make it pleasurable.

I'll never undertand. We leave our kids to flounder on their own with such a basic part of the human lifespan and then we wonder why so many women (and some men) say they don't enjoy it. Why so many get pregnant. Why you have a 14 year old girl that is bleeding and doesn't even know why?

Why does sex have to be so DIFFICULT a topic for people? I'll never understand that.
