A McCain Gaffe in Jordan | The Trail | washingtonpost.com
by Mike the Usurper at 12:47 pm EDT, Mar 18, 2008

Pressed to elaborate, McCain said it was "common knowledge and has been reported in the media that al-Qaeda is going back into Iran and receiving training and are coming back into Iraq from Iran, that's well known. And it's unfortunate." A few moments later, Sen. Joseph Lieberman, standing just behind McCain, stepped forward and whispered in the presidential candidate's ear. McCain then said: "I'm sorry, the Iranians are training extremists, not al-Qaeda."

Sorry, cCain making this sort of error is nothing new, the fact that it's now being noted is. As screwed up as things are now, someone making basic mistakes like this is a problem, the nominee making this mistake is a train wreck in progress.

Is this because he has gotten into the habit of disingenuously referring to every terrorist group as Al'Queda or is he just completely ignorant of the political and religious fault lines in Iraq?

Personally, I think we're starting to see the onset of Alzheimer's or just straight senility, but that's because of all the other things he's also missed (liberal Republican, and last year's walk in Baghdad as examples). This is sad.

While I disagree with McCain on the vast majority of issues, I do not doubt his sincerity to do what he thinks is best for the country over what he thinks is best for himself or his cronies. On that score I give him more points than some of the other candidates, and certainly more than the current holder of the office.
