Do I? I mean, it looks slick, but I get the impression that I would find it interesting for about 2 days and never touch the icon again... Do I NEED it?

A few thoughts.

By definition, all novelty dissipates, but a decline in utility need not necessarily follow. If new and interesting content continues to appear, it may continue to prove compelling. In my view, the tool's (potential) utility derives from its role in increasing the accessibility (namely, interactive exploration) of large collections of image (and video) data. There is a lot of room for improvement with regard to this particular tool, but its (apparent) popularity, even if temporary, should be Good for the Internet if it leads more site operators to open up their collections in this way. It's very easy to Cooliris-enable a web site; it's just a matter of publishing another RSS feed. Once these feeds are available, you can use them with any tool, not just Cooliris. In some sense, the emergence of this tool (and soon enough, others like it) represents progress in the decoupling of content from presentation.

Or something. The important thing is that you keep touching the icon.

People say to me, "Whatever it takes." I tell them, It's going to take everything.
