Study: It helps to have a 'white' name
by jessica at 2:58 pm EST, Jan 14, 2003

] Resumes with white-sounding first names elicited 50
] percent more responses than ones with black-sounding
] names, according to a study by professors at the
] University of Chicago Graduate School of Business and the
] Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

I have a "white" first name and a "black" last name. I wonder which was more important to my prospective employers? I'd like to point out that I had a MUCH easier time looking for work in snowy-white southeastern Connecticut than I did in Central Jersey. I wonder if my name had anything to do with it?

While we're on the subject of racism, this is just infuriating.

In an ideal situation affirmative action laws would be bad, because they focus on a racial distinction, and we shouldn't be doing that. However, in a situation where the opportunities of a particular group have been cut by systemic prejudice, quotas can provide a counter balance. When wondering whether it is time to remove these quotas, information about the state of the prejudice problem is critical. Is our society really as advanced as we think it is? The time to remove the quotas is when in the majority of situations quotas create
a biased judgement where one would not have otherwise existed. This study suggests that the time is not now. Mind you, one study does not the truth make.

but it already is. Consider that black America makes nearly $18B in annual wages, but has the lowest wealth of any ethnic group. You could argue til time indefinite that it may be cultural or even promoted within the community, but ultimately, black America is oppressed. I know you said "in that form" but really, does it make a difference what form it takes?

The bottom line is: we've got a LONG way to go.
