vnunet.com: Google DMCAed by Kazaa
by Decius at 11:00 am EDT, Sep 5, 2003

] Fifteen sites are thought to be in breach of the US
] Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), and are said by
] Sharman Networks to be running unauthorised copies of its
] Kazaa P2P software.

This story is a little jumbled... The RIAA is mentioned repeatedly, but I don't see any relationship that they have to this. Google got DMCAed by Kazaa for linking to sites that distribute their software without their permission.

you're right, the RIAA has nothing to do with this. apparently the fact that kazaa is involved immediately means it's got to do with the RIAA. In this case Sharman is pissed at someone who created a derivative product of their kazaa shite, and is calling Google a 'circumvention device' because it allows people to aquire copies of it (called kazaa++ or something, i think). at least, that's my understanding.

as the story notes briefly, if you do a search which would result in a link to the kazaa+ site, or other blocked sites, google informs you of the blockage and tells you what urls were blocked, so you can still cut and paste them into your browser.
