advertising...
by leed25d at 5:13 pm EST, Dec 14, 2003

I was in downtown San Francisco the other day. While I was standing
at a crosswalk waiting for the pedestrian light to change, I noticed
on the pavement, just beyond the curb, a stenciled likeness of GW
Bush, in yellow on the black pavement, above the text "One term
President".

Now, it seems to me that this is an extremely effective placement of
the message. When people step off of a curb, they naturally look down
and pay attention.

Its very effective, and common. Almost every street corner in SF has some kind of thing spray painted on it. IBM covered the whole city awhile back with the "peace/love/linux" thing. Around the civic center area "Stop bad cops" was common for awhile. There was the nomoreprisons.net guy, who blanked the corners of the Height area. I'm always seeing stuff on street corners.

The city fines anyone they catch doing it now. It became a big deal IBM went way too far. You only see nameless political statements and random art stuff these days.. Thankfully, I have not seen a company using it for advo in awhile.
