Let Saddam Live
by Jeremy at 9:07 am EST, Dec 18, 2003

This column may be the most futile of my long career. I am about to plead for Saddam Hussein's life.

I do so not because I have the slightest doubt that he is a killer, responsible for taking the lives of many thousands, but because sparing his life would send a message to the world that judicial death -- so often abused -- is no longer acceptable.

Tom, do you care to weigh in? How do you feel about this case?

The same question will be raised about Osama, and for me that is a much clearer example.

Intellectually, I cannot condone killing these people, because violence is the problem, and this is violence. Killing these people in particular, because they are so well known and so widely hated, drives home the message to the people that it killing people can be the right thing to do. This is a counterproductive meme.

Emotionally I want to see the fuckers fry.

I think its inevitable that these guys are going to be executed. These are extreme examples. We've got to get quite a bit more mature in terms of how we handle every day criminals before we can really consider humane treatment of a super criminal. We're not ready.

they should let him run in their first election. Lets test this democracy we're making...If he loses, then we kill him.
