Supreme Court Rejects Request to Reinsert Feeding Tube
Topic: Miscellaneous 1:27 pm EST, Mar 24, 2005

] The Supreme Court today turned down a request by Terri
] Schiavo's parents for an emergency order to restore the
] Florida woman's feeding tube.

Who's "real" in this story at this point? Are right-to-die people pulling the husband's strings? Fundies pulling the parents'?

Groklaw on Steven Henry at LinuxWorld, GPL3
Topic: Miscellaneous 5:01 pm EST, Feb 22, 2005

]
] I read Steven Henry's remarks he gave at LinuxWorld, and
] I believe if I had been there when he said it, I could
] have overcome all shyness and stood up to answer him on
] the spot, lawyer that he is notwithstanding. His remarks
] didn't make much of a media splash, so I seriously
] debated whether to answer him on Groklaw or not, because
] I am aware anything on Groklaw gets more publicity than
] he otherwise would receive. But I decided to answer him,
] finally, because his view is not unique to him, and it's
] important to help people who think like that to
] understand things better.

All good stuff. There's some discussion and links down in
here to talk about the next version of the GPL that's going
around. Eben Moglen, RMS, and company, are apparently having it out... not only about patents but also about TCPA (RMS' Treacherous Computing) stuff as well.

] and it has sent them a delisting notice. This is a notice
] of potential delisting, as SCO's press release urgently
] lets us know.

Heh... SCOX got back out of the $3.50 range a few weeks ago and has
been hovering around $4 for awhile...

U: They've been delisted from NASDAQ!

GrokLaw: Cerf and Kahn Win Turing Award
Topic: Miscellaneous 11:55 am EST, Feb 17, 2005

] Vinton Cerf and Robert Kahn have been awarded the Turing
] award for the TCP/IP protocol. Or in plain English, for
] making the Internet possible. One of the reasons given
] for the adoption of the TCP/IP protocols was they were
] unencumbered by patent claims, because Cerf and Kahn
] didn't file for any. This was open source at its purest:

Interesting take...

Authentication in Distributed Systems: Theory and Practice
Topic: Miscellaneous 1:11 pm EST, Feb 10, 2005

] We describe a theory of authentication and a system that
] implements it. Our theory is based on the notion of
] principal and a %u2018speaks for%u2019 relation between
] principals. A simple principal either has a name or is a
] communication channel; a compound principal can express
] an adopted role or delegated authority. The theory shows
] how to reason about a principal%u2019s authority by
] deducing the other principals that it can speak for;
] authenticating a channel is one important application. We
] use the theory to explain many existing and proposed
] security mechanisms. In particular, we describe the
] system we have built. It passes principals efficiently as
] arguments or results of remote procedure calls, and it
] handles public and shared key encryption, name lookup in
] a large name space, groups of principals, program
] loading, delegation, access control, and revocation.

I may have memed this before. It is an outstanding paper.
