UNIQLO’s Wakamaru - Josh Spear, Trendspotting
Topic: Technology 1:39 pm EDT, Sep  6, 2008

UNIQLO has never been afraid to inovate the shopping experience (think: UT Loop, grid playground and the concept t-shirt store) but this time they are adding a robot to their stores. Yep, you read right a robot named Wakamaru. Designed by Toshiyuki Kita and engineered by Mitsubishi, the robot can make eye contact with you, have simple conversations and help you shop for some Japanese animation t-shirts. But there is a catch, the robot is being described as neither human nor machine. The only thing we can think of that fits that catagory is robocop, which could end up to be a huge PR problem for UNIQLO if anyone saw Robocop 3. Look for Wakamaru to make his/her first appearnce at the Soho store in NYC sometime in the second week of September.

CDT | Analysis of S. 909: McCain-Kerry Bill
Topic: Miscellaneous 1:38 pm EDT, Sep  6, 2008

Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Bob Kerrey (D-NE) have introduced legislation that would force U.S. encryption users to adopt vulnerable and costly "key recovery" systems. The bill provides only token relief from current export controls, and would create strong incentives to coerce American consumers and businesses to adopt untested and potentially insecure third-party access to sensitive encryption keys.

Ok, so I'm not completely on crack ... it was Kerrey, not Kerry.

RE: Biden supported Manditory Goverment Key Escrow and CALEA

Decius wrote:

Biden was chairman of the Judiciary Committee, and introduced the Comprehensive Counter-Terrorism Act in the 90s, requiring carriers of encrypted communications to turn the keys over to law enforcement, according to McCullagh.

Biden's bill spurred Philip Zimmerman to invent the PGP algorithm and publish it for free, McCullagh notes.

The Comprehensive Counter-Terrroism act was defeated, but Biden followed up with the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement (ACT), which became law in 1994, says McCullagh.

In his favor, he did speak out against the Communications Decency Act.

IIRC, the key escrow bill was being co-sponsored by none other than Kerry and McCain, no?
