Weird, weird thoughts
Topic: Miscellaneous 8:15 am EST, Dec  7, 2005

So I see this article, which seems an interesting idea at first, until my mind gets a hold of it and says: "Hell no! I don't want to be annoyed into taking my medication. I want to be tracked down like a dog and have my medicine forcibly administered without any choice of compliance!" The next thought would be the above device, combined with this one in such a way that when you walk through the room, the medicine is administered by way of a blowdart or bullet-riding hypo. After all, the machines track fast enough not to miss.

Yeah, I need to get help....

Driving Habits
Topic: Miscellaneous 11:07 am EST, Nov 22, 2005

What a concept! When you have to drive around lots of pedestrians and other vehicles in chaos you learn to drive without hitting other people and cars. Which explains why those of us who can pay attention to other vehicles around them are much better drivers. Then again, I can't say that -- when I'm flying, I am aware of *nothing* behind me. Then again, when you are the fastest car on the road, you don't. Because the police are the only ones who are faster and they will let you know when they get there with the siren.

But I stand firm by my principles -- the speed limit should be replaced by the traffic speed advisory signs like you see for on- and off-ramps. I know of one ramp in my own city I've pulled at 80MPH (without loosing control, omg) which is marked as a 45MPH ramp. Yes, I've merged into traffic speeding above the limit! What a concept! I've _accelerated_ on the on-ramp, merging in at the speed limit! It's called an acceleration lane for a reason.

I recognize that the article mostly talks about slower speed (50 MPH and down) driving in cities, as opposed to low-flight as evidenced by the AutoBahns. In a situation like the AutoBahn, it does make sense to have a clear road, with clearly defined lanes, etc. Driving at 80+ is much different than driving at 50MPH and down. Believe me, I've driven in the northern territories much more than most people do.

So yeah. I got a speeding ticket tonight (11/30). This crow is awful tasty.

Lister Engines
Topic: Miscellaneous 8:06 pm EST, Nov 20, 2005

Not the prettiest, nor the lightest, but the Lister stationary diesel engine eeks out as much as 50% effiency, and is simple to work on and have some maintence concerns (not as easy as driving a car for five years, then buying another with only having replaced tires, gas, and oil). There are stories of a Lister running in Alaska for 40 years continuously. And they hand-crank even as cold as -20 degrees F.

The only sad part is that 99.995% of them are currently made in China or India.

There are some advantages to having UN*X machines named after body parts. It's been so long since I've done anything with this box that I forgot how funny the system messages were.

Fearless Mice

We're obviously only a few years away from making most, if not all Sci-Fi movies a reality.

When this moves to humans, we're gonners.

I, for one, welcome our cyborg jackboot masters.
