The Drug War Refugees
Topic: Miscellaneous 6:16 pm EST, Feb  6, 2003

quoted material :

---
Along the rugged coastline of British Columbia, more than a generation ago, the first American refugees trickled in. As the Vietnam War raged, draft dodgers who chose to flee America rather than fight an unacceptable war gravitated to Canada's west coast, to rain-washed Vancouver and northward in tiny villages astride deep fiords left by the glacial past.

A few of the new arrivals brought with them a taste for marijuana, and some began cultivating pot gardens. Isolated from the law by rugged terrain, separated from most of civilization by deep bays, a marijuana industry was born. As the tale goes, the coast north of Vancouver became a pot lover's paradise.

Now a new breed of American refugee has arrived, seeking asylum from a different kind of war--the fight over medical marijuana. By some counts, they number more than 100 expatriate U.S. citizens, many of them from California, the fiercest battleground in America's medpot fight.

Fight over dances and drugs tearing S.F. church apart
Topic: Miscellaneous 12:55 pm EST, Feb  5, 2003

St. Johns is a small Episcopal parish, a little gem of a church in a tough corner of the Mission District. For two decades, it has been a predominantly gay congregation that sees itself as "a community of faith welcoming all colors, cultures and sexual orientations."

But that has not stopped a bitter fight between the old pillars of the church and the Divine Rhythm Society, a group of mostly young and straight seekers with roots in the ecstasy-fueled rave scene in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Guernica Reproduction Covered at UN
Topic: Miscellaneous 12:50 pm EST, Feb  5, 2003

NEW YORK.- The "Guernica" work by Pablo Picasso at the entrance of the Security Council of the United Nations has been covered with a curtain. The reason for covering this work is that this is the place where diplomats make statements to the press and have this work as the background. The Picasso work features the horrors of war. On January 27 a large blue curtain was placed to cover the work.

A diplomat stated that it would not be an appropriate background if the ambassador of the United States at the U.N. John Negroponte, or Powell, talk about war surrounded with women, children and animals shouting with horror and showing the suffering of the bombings.

] Carlos nonchalantly asks whether his drink was made with
] whole or skim milk. He takes a moment to slurp on his
] grande Caffe Mocha in a crowded Starbucks, and then he
] gets back to explaining how much he wants HIV, the virus

Wow, this is really fucked up. I can't believe that someone would think that living with AIDS is anything like living with diabetes. This made my stomach turn.

Restaurants open late in San Francisco
Topic: Miscellaneous 2:29 pm EST, Jan 21, 2003

Been tossin' a few back, partying hearty into the wee hours, and now you just gotta have something to eat, to take that eat screechin' hunger outta your besotted and befuddled brain? Here's a list of places we know from experience that can take the edge off your growling tummy and give you some time to clear your head for the road home. All of these joints are in San Francisco, so if you have to "bridge and tunnel," don't wait until you get back to the boonies to slurp and slob. It just may be too late.

Ladder Theory Master Page
Topic: Miscellaneous 4:14 am EST, Jan  6, 2003

The ladder theory is a theory of adult male/female interaction. It has its basis in many years of sociological field testing. it was first conceptualized in 1994 in Exeter, CA. My acknowledgements to Jared Whitson for his role in formalizing the theory.

I have a feeling that this url is going to piss quite a few people off. Personally, I like it quite a bit. I'm a bit puzzled though, over why women have two ladders and men only one. I don't understand how a woman is able to have a male friend and not vice versa.

Anyhow. Enjoy. I laughed quite a bit.

BigMarv's How I Did That | Tivo's 30 Second Skip Easter Egg
Topic: Miscellaneous 4:13 am EST, Jan  6, 2003

As it turns out, a 30 second skip is buried within the programming of the TiVo and can be brought to the surface using an Easter Egg. After enabling the 30 second skip feature, The --arrow| button becomes a 30 second skip button. Once you begin using this feature, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it.

So how do I do this? It's easy.

Palo Alto party ends in looting
Topic: Miscellaneous 2:55 pm EST, Dec 27, 2002

It began as a Christmas night party at the Palo Alto Elks Lodge, a ``social gathering,'' it said on the contract, which estimated that about 100 might show up to dance to a DJ and drink sodas, security provided.

Instead, as many as 500 showed up at the hip-hop party, which spiraled out of control. After it broke up about 1 a.m. Thursday, partygoers reportedly looted two convenience stores, raced and spun out cars along El Camino Real and fired gunshots into the air. Police also suspect that someone at the party robbed a teen walking just four blocks away.
