] In the taxi to Richard's place, the conversation falls
] silent. He hasn't been tested in a couple of years, and
] he's reluctant to get a test now. He might very well be
] positive already. But as long as he doesn't know for
] sure, he can always hope that tonight is the night he
] gets the virus. Every date is potentially The One.
] Stepping out of the cab into the rain, I ask what he will
] do if he finds out one day that he has succeeded in being
] infected -- ending the fun of being a bug chaser. He
] stops, then says he might move on to being a gift giver:
] "If I know that he's negative and I'm fucking him, it
] sort of gets me off. I'm murdering him in a sense,
] killing him slowly, and that's sort of, as sick as it
] sounds, exciting to me."

this article actually made me cry. what the hell is happening in this country? does this go on in other countries? i'm not one to suggest how other people should live their lives, but what's wrong with these people? besides the suicidal tendencies? why do they "get off" doing it to other people?

Breasts removed by mistake; paperwork slip-up blamed
Topic: Health and Wellness 9:06 am EST, Jan 21, 2003

] A paperwork mistake cost Linda McDougal both her breasts
] and left her suffering infections, facing more surgeries
] and trying to rebuild her life.

Two thoughts: 1. The idea of putting a cap on malpractice lawsuits is a very bad idea. The most money this woman could get is $250,000?? That's absurd. 2. ALWAYS get a second opinion, especially if it's for something serious.

Study: Sewage toxins might get in food

] "Researchers at the University of Franche-Comte in
] Besancon discovered that snails placed in a container
] filled with soil from a disused lead and zinc smelter had
] increased levels of cadmium in their bodies."

I guess I'm not making my famous "Worms-n-Snails Casserole" for dinner anymore. That ought to make Tom happy...

Topic: Health and Wellness 10:53 am EST, Dec 17, 2002

] "WINNIPEG, Canada (Reuters) -- It took an airport metal
] detector to give a Canadian woman a clue to why she was
] suffering from persistent stomach aches four months after
] having abdominal surgery."

Good airport security. Bad surgeon!!

Man saved by condiments

] "Ward was five miles from the coal mine where he works as
] a security guard and two miles from the nearest home when
] his car went off the road December 2. It plunged 150 feet
] and hit a tree, destroying the headlights and horn.
]
] The area's first major snowfall hit a few days later and
] temperatures remained below freezing for several days. To
] stay warm, Ward ripped the lining from the car's roof and
] used it as a blanket, Likens said.
]
] He also burned paper, including pages from his EMT
] manual, and melted snow to drink. His only food was what
] he could get out of an old peanut butter jar and sauce
] packets from Taco Bell."

Only in West Virginia.

Hot laptop burns scientist's penis
Topic: Health and Wellness 10:13 am EST, Nov 25, 2002

No, no.. before you start laughing.. read the article. He was "writing a report" and he really did have his pants on! Really!!
Okay.. let's say it together.. "BULLSHIT!"
I'm sorry, but I really did have the hottest laptop imaginable, and yes it got hot, but I was always DRESSED when I used it on my lap, and I never got blisters. And also, when I felt it starting to get too hot, I PUT IT BACK ON MY DESK.

Lawsuit claims McDonald's burgers and fries are making kids fat
Topic: Health and Wellness 11:37 am EST, Nov 21, 2002

"People don't go to sleep thin and wake up obese," Lerman said. "The understanding and comprehension of what hamburgers and french fries do has been with us for a long, long time."

I can't wait until someone sues Starbucks on behalf of all the Type-A people running around out there.
