Stripe Snoop on TSS: WMV Video clip

] Stripe Snoop was showcased on G4TechTV's The Screen
] Savers. However, I have little beef with one of the
] hosts, Kevin Rose. Rose manages to do a 4 minute bit,
] using my software, my hardware, even my exact reader
] modification, and mentions Stripe Snoop once. Once! And
] for all my hard work on the matter, I am mentioned ...
] not at all. Yes, your humble author whose work Rose
] basicly jacks isn't even mentioned. Even Rose's
] introduction, "The other day I looked in my wallet and
] wondered...," was lifted directly from this site. He even
] uses a photo from my website in the production. While I
] enjoy the exposure, and indeed the web stats show I nice
] bump, Rose does not give credit where credit is due.
] Somehow I can't see Leo Laporte being a jackass like
] that.

Maybe instead of ranting about his miscue, you should send him a nice thank you email for featuring your work. Sometimes being a gentleman and giving the ole tip o the hat works wonders in the karma department!

btw - great tool!

I did email him thanking him for doing the feature the day after the show aired. And I am happy about the exposure, don't get me wrong.

The thing is, I can't really even estimate the number of hours I have put into Stripe Snoop between writing code, reading obscure ISO documentation, building hardware, helping users, updating the website, and filming/editing videos. After seeing the segment I was rather upset because not only did Rose barely acknowledge all this work, but lead his audience to believe, by omition, that his curiosity and innovation been responsible for much of what was seen in the segment.

Thanks for the heads up though.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time that this type of thing has happened with Kevin Rose. I have had similar things happen to my work with Kevin Rose and got NO MENTION whatsoever. I have also PERSONALLY seen this happen to at least 2 other people that I know very well and they also got no recognition. And all of us have taken the high road and simply been happy for the recognition but the high road is starting to get crowded.

If it were a one-time incident, then it would be another thing entirely. Unfortunately, he is consistant in his lack of acknowledgement. But if you insist I look at the bright side, I guess I should give him points for consistancy. :-/

Well, I was going to suggest that since he's relatively new to the show, that maybe he's just trying to earn some credibility points the easy way. Afterall, to the audience at large, he's just delivering what they want, which is things of interest. Not necessarily the stories behind them.

But if this is a series of behavior which shows little or no signs of changing, then maybe he's just an asshole? Perhaps a polite message to his producer suggesting that he throw the creators a bone would be enough to nudge him and ingratiate himself more to the community in which he's mining.

FWIW, I've stopped watching that show for over a year now, as it seemed to become a parady of itself. It used to be a really great place to see neat stuff, but now it just seems like Wired meets Slashdot meets the marketing department for the SciFi channel.

Yes, it dates back to the pre-G4 days when he had his "dark tips" segment on the old shows. This was before he was a regular co-host on the screen savers. It has been an ongoing problem. The producers seem to like him, since they gave him the full hosting gig, so I doubt it would accomplish much. My whole philosophy is to sit back and watch people hang themselves. My job is just to hand them the rope. :)

It stinks that they are about the only mass media outlet for hackers though. Luckily for me I dont get the channel anyway. :)

PS: I showed you some love on BRR last night Acidus! Who needs KR anyway? Man, I hope BinRev gets more support and attention so we can combat their BS with our honesty and integrity. :(
