What makes sense?
by cerkit at 1:58 pm EST, Mar 10, 2005

Herein a US Marine tells a slightly different tale about how our good buddy Saddam was captured. Whats striking to me is how much more likely it is, that this is what happened.

Take into account the other version of this instance had you believing that, what the US described as the most egotistical "dictator" of a state-nation, was found alone, unguard in a hole. And that he was taken prisoner no-harm-no-foul, in the middle of a large campaign that spanned the entire region (of which he was the leader).

Hmmmm. You have a former marine of a certain ethnicity being interviewed by reporters in his home country. He makes claims and offers no specifics. What unit was he in? What was the name of the soldier who died? Why didn't Saddam shoot himself? Sounds like a former marine grandstanding to his neighbors.

Saddam was hardly leading the war against the US. Around May 2003 or so, the 2nd Gulf War became the Iraqi Civil war. After that its just the Sunni's killing the Shiites and us, with the Kurds hoping no one decides to head north.

In Fact, the capture probably went like this...

Saddam: You're not one of my Republican Guards... who are you?
Ash: Who wants to known?
Saddam: I am Saddam Hussein, President of Iraq, Lord of Arabia and leader of its peoples.
Ash: Well hello Mister Fancypants! Well I've got news for you pal, you ain't leadin' but two things: Jack an shit... and Jack just left town.

It wouldn't make any sense for him to release that type of information. Releasing those specifics, save what unit he was in, and that depending on his orders even, is NOT public information to be released without breaching military intelligence guidelines. I understand he wasn't exactly monitoring those guidelines in releasing this information to begin with... but, if it was entirely false the followup would be "Marine arrested for conduct unbecoming..." instead.

You have a fairly distorted idea of what its like in Iraq. I have a little more than half dozen close friends there in the infantry, and it's not candyland. And this is Saddam, who was surrounded with, as you brought up yourself, his own Royal Guard... found alone in a hole?

I thought of a funny quote that fit my belief that Saddam wasn't leading much of anything in Dec 2003, and printed it. I think is goes without saying my perception of Iraq doesn't resemble the movie Army of Darkness!
