Life at the Top - House of Sweden
by Rattle at 2:18 pm EDT, Oct 26, 2009

The top two floors of House of Sweden have 19 corporate apartments, ranging in size from 800–2600 square feet (68-242 kvm). The apartments all have an open floor plan with generous living rooms, dining rooms and master bedrooms with their own bathrooms. Floor-to-ceiling windows and spacious balconies offer spectacular views of either the Potomac River or the lush Rock Creek Park. The standard of the apartments is very high, featuring carefully chosen, solid materials composed with Swedish design expertise. Bedrooms can easily be converted into offices and single apartments can also be combined to create even larger spaces if required.

It's well known that the Swedish Embassy in Washington, DC has it's own night club... Apparently it also has apartments you can lease. Yes, it's apparently possible to live in Sweden without leaving North America.

Update: I have not been able to find out if the apartments come with health care...

Two questions:
Is it legal to live there if you are not Swedish, or do you need a visa?
Whats legal in Sweden that is illegal in America and why is it important enough that the embassy had to install apartments?
Do they install apartments in every embassy they operate?

This looks like three questions.

Is it legal to live there if you are not Swedish, or do you need a visa?

I have never heard of needing a visa to enter an Embassy, so I'd guess no..

I think it's a case of they did it because they could. They operate their own nightclub, but nothing goes on in the nightclub that doesn't go on in US clubs, except perhaps Eurovision night. But there isn't any legal reason for that...

Do they install apartments in every embassy they operate?

No idea..

Yeah, but you're not living there. You don't need a visa to enter Sweden, but you do need one if you plan to stay.

Given it's the Embassy, there have got to be some special rules that apply to those situations. Who knows.. They also don't clearly say anywhere if they will lease to non-Swedes.

I say move in. After 5 years, demand Swedish citizenship.

Haw haw! While funny, that's soooo wrong.

1) It actually takes longer to get from Georgetown to Downtown than it does from Bethesda.

2) Those places look pricey. I think they are out of my league.

3) I don't think I could come up with a better way to muddy things while my wife is in the middle of getting permanent resident status.

Maybe you should move up here... Live in the Swedish embassy.. It would add a whole new vector for jokes about your socialist Canadian roots. We could claim the only reason you lived in Atlanta so long is because you looked at the state flag and thought they were successful in seceding. :)
