Videos from PhreakNIC 7 Online
by Dolemite at 9:19 pm EST, Nov 10, 2003

PhreakNIC, for those of you raised by wolves, is an annual technology and culture exhibition (the kinder, gentler name for "Hacker Convention") in Nashville, TN. This year's event is all over, except for a few blood tests that we're still awaiting results on, but if you missed it you can catch some of the events through the video feeds. Wilpig was nice enough to set up a recorder on ConTV, but unfortunately it crashed a couple of times. Some of the best attended talks were lost.

Seriously, just download the .avi files, as they are smaller (DiVX Format) and have been edited. The raw .wmv files are labeled based on the original schedule, not the actual execution of such schedule. For instance, the cable feed wasn't set up for the Welcome, so if you download it you'll be cursing at the fact that you have an hour of Nashville Tourism commercials.

Not just crashed. But a little power outage caused a few to be lost. :( The crash claimed two the power outage claimed two or three.

TIP - next time consider rolling VHS alongside the DVR just to play it safe. That way if the DVR crashes, you have an analog backup that you can digitize later. Not trying to criticize Wilpig in any way. It was beyond cool of him to take the time to do this! But I've had numerous bad experiences with DVR software and learned this tip the hard way - this software is still very much in its infancy and just too prone to crash - as was found out at PN7. -LB

Just a little fact that not many ppl know about that. the two crashes it had weren't the software really. One was a power outage the cause of which will remain unspoken. The other was an OS error from where I was copying something off for someone and it hit an error and was waiting for a response. Unfortunately it stopped everything not just the file copy. :-/ But it has been suggested a backup recording method for next year.
