CNN.com - Flynt won't publish topless Lynch photos - Nov. 11, 2003

] Pornographer Larry Flynt says he bought nude photos of
] Pfc. Jessica Lynch to publish in Hustler magazine, but
] changed his mind because she's a "good kid" who became "a
] pawn for the government."

People don't give Flynt enough credit (sometimes). Is it funny to anyone else that "Pornographer" is a title used by the media?

okay, after reading this article, I am beginning to find some proof in another one of my crazy theories. I predict that by 2010, nearly 90% of all young women will have nude photos or videos of themselves _somewhere_. If you look at two very important factors, you may agree:

o The explosion of Internet porn (and porn in general). It's everywhere. There are thousands, perhaps 10's of thousands of sites. Each with its own classes of fetish and appeal. Upon a non-scientific survey (ahem), I very rarely, if ever, see the same girl on more than one site. Which means that there are a lot of girls who are willing to take their clothes off publically.

o The amount of money being generated by these sites is astounding. After talking to several folks who work in the 'biz', I am amazed at the cash flow. Even after paying the 'models' several hundred dollars or even thousand dollars, they are still generating margins of 100% or more. Given this economic occurance, who can resist getting into this business?

So the likely story here is that young and poor Ms. Lynch needed some cash. Service buddies are either running a site or are in the loop on a site. Ms. Lynch poses and gets paid. Then gets shipped off for war, only to end up as one helluva marketable pawn. If Mr. Flynt is indeed not lying (not likely given Larry's track record), then this could bode poorly for the groups finding it acceptable to market Ms. Lynch to a starving American public desperate for something positive to point at in this wretched mess.

i agree with your thesis if not your arguments, though i'd replace 'nude' with the more general 'revealing'.

i was discussing a similar topic with a female friend the other day -- she's really bothered by the proliferation of small, easily carried digital cameras, for this very reason. the more people have cellphones and pdas and so on with a decent built in camera, the more likely it is that someone will snap a picture of you doing something embarrassing (at least) while you're at the bar/pool/beach/party/whatever. I hadn't thought about it before, and my initial reaction was to not care. I doubt anyone's all that interested in looking at pictures of me, regardless of what i'm doing, but after talking with this person and remembering other conversations i've had, i imagine this is a concern for many people, especially girls. clearly there are lots of women willing to get naked for cash, but there's even more who're likely to end up posted on the internet, never knowing it, due to some joker with a camera phone. i wouldn't dream of proposing a solution of any kind... i doubt there is one, but it's something to be aware of. privacy advocates have seen this coming for years... pretty soon the only thing keeping ones likeness off the record is going to be the lack of a social life or any interesting characteristics.

I'm not sure i'm cynical enough to agree. Clearly some servicemen were in on it, someone took pictures, but the accounts i've seen describe "cavorting", and indicate that great pains were taken by Flynt to positively id the person in the picture as ms. lynch. this makes me think the pix are more like the washed out and indistinct tabloid shots of various celebs and royalty going topless on mediteranian beaches than a posed, planned photoshoot, even an amateur one.

as an afterthought, i'd imagine it's statistically unlikely, even with perfect memory, that you'd see the same girl twice. the world's a big place, with lots of people, and the, uh, turnover rate, in pr0n is probably pretty high.

There is a redundant post from ryan is the supernicety not displayed in this view.
