Topic: Technology 12:00 am EDT, May  4, 2005

] VoIP testing service solutions provider Empirix is
] showing its Hammer On-Call for VoIP infrastructure and
] applications test service. This is a flavor of
] Hammer-On-Call%u2019s carrier level solution service.

blogged for reference on the Teleworking project.

O'Reilly Network: Top Ten 802.11 Myths of 2005
Topic: Technology 11:56 pm EDT, May  3, 2005

] In the course of preparing the second edition of 802.11
] Wireless Networks: The Definitive Guide, I noticed
] several myths that repeatedly popped up in popular
] wireless coverage that I'd like to debunk.

Great list of common misunderstandings for WiFi networks. The softest one is that remote access techniques aren't optimal as security standards. This is only true in certain circumstances and equally untrue in others. I think RADIUS and LDAP backends to things like LEAP, 1X, and WPA are almost required if you're going to manage authentication and authorization tokens in a sensible way.

FUSE-in techno fest lineup is announced
Topic: Arts 12:01 pm EDT, May  3, 2005

The lineup for the annual Detroit Electronic Music Festival..

] Sponsors include Pepsi, Molson, Verizon and Big Boy.

only in MI would Big Boy possibly make the sponsor list for a techno festival... sheesh.

line up looks good, including stalwarts like Aux 88, Slum Village, Stacey Pullen, UR, and Mos Def and of course the regulars like Carl, Richie, Kevin and the other pioneers.

My favorite act though just might be Raiders of the Lost Arp. What a great name.

] It's no surprise then that we can now confirm what the
] super-intelligent if somehat wobbly hacks at Vulture
] Central have known for years: alcohol makes you cleverer.

I'd like to accept this Nobel prize on behalf of my friends at Guinness and Bass...

Lenovo and IBM: East Meets West, Big-Time
Topic: Business 11:32 am EDT, May  3, 2005

] Not that Lenovo can't pinch pennies. Its labor costs are
] a rock-bottom $3 per desktop PC, among the lowest
] anywhere. That has helped drive its operating expenses to
] less than 9% of revenues, half the average for the
] computer hardware business

UN-BE-LEAVE-ABLE... $3 of labor costs per PC. Any other business (even TEXTILES!) would KILL for that kind of margin.

Cities brace for broadband war
Topic: Society 5:01 pm EDT, May  2, 2005

] "The people of Lafayette feel like there is a history of
] seizing the initiative," said John St. Julien, a member
] of Lafayette Coming Together, a citizens group supporting
] the fiber network. "Our Creole and Cajun communities have
] always been told by outsiders that everything we did was
] wrong--from our language to the food we eat. Culturally,
] we've learned not to care what others think or say about
] us. I think it gives us a place to stand when companies
] like BellSouth and Cox come in and tell us we can't do
] something."

This is a storm that's been brewing for years and is mostly the result of the CLEC boom collapsing. There's been no real competition to drive broadband deployment for about 4 years now, and there's never been any competition to incent rural deployment.

The electricity analogy is an apt one. With it, the US leapfrogged the rest of the world and was on solid footing to become the dominant force of the 20th century. Broadband is not fast food. It is not a convenience. It is the next plank in the platform which can carry us into the 21st century as a leading force. One that we are sorely behind in by all accounts.

] There has been a small outbreak of zombism in
