Come Back, Little Deaniacs
Topic: Politics and Law 3:25 pm EST, Jan 31, 2004

Ever since the Iowa returns, Dean's more innocent followers have been grappling with the shock of discovering that it is possible to be pure of heart, fired with dedication, and still lose overwhelmingly.

First you discover that your paragon of a candidate is all too deeply human. Then you realize that the real heroics come from you and your friends with the pamphlets, stolidly going door to door.

NYT waxes poetic in this offering of consolation to Dean supporters.

"Welcome to the real world, young idealists. Enjoy."

A Super Bowl Deficit
Topic: Society 3:20 pm EST, Jan 31, 2004

Enhancing male sexual performance is one thing, but public policy advocacy is beyond the pale when it comes to acceptable Super Bowl fare.

That it is deemed necessary to shield viewers from pressing public issues while they are being bombarded with commercial pitches is a sad commentary on the state of our culture, and of our democracy.

Amen.

Pakistan's Nuclear Responsibility
Topic: International Relations 3:18 pm EST, Jan 31, 2004

All the links in this reckless supply chain -- commercial, military or political -- must be uncovered and severed.

... an intricate underground network ...

Musharraf is currently under attack from several directions and barely escaped two recent assassination attempts. Even so, Washington must insist that he not flinch from his responsibility ...

How to Hack an Election
Topic: Politics and Law 3:11 pm EST, Jan 31, 2004

Concerned citizens have been warning that new electronic voting technology being rolled out nationwide can be used to steal elections. Now there is proof.

Maryland commissioned a staged attack on eletronic voting machines, in which computer-security experts would try to foil the safeguards and interfere with an election.

They were disturbingly successful.

Bush Backs Away From His Claims About Iraq Arms
Topic: International Relations 9:30 am EST, Jan 28, 2004

"I think it's very important for us to let the Iraq Survey Group do its work, so we can find out the facts and compare the facts to what was thought."

"We're seeking all the facts."

White House to Review Prewar Intelligence on Iraqi Arms
Topic: Current Events 2:06 am EST, Jan 27, 2004

Bush administration officials insisted today that the Iraq war was justified, but they promised further review of prewar intelligence after the outgoing chief American weapons inspector said that he was almost certain that Iraq had no significant banned weaponry before the war.

The White House said today the CIA had already begun reviewing its prewar analyses.

Partnership, Under Construction
Topic: International Relations 2:04 am EST, Jan 27, 2004

The United States and Russia cooperate to mutual benefit, in part, because our interests coincide.

But our ability to cooperate rests, too, on trust, which President Bush and President Putin have labored tirelessly to build.

The knee-jerk antagonism of the past is behind us. We can now deal effectively with even the most difficult issues between us. We are friends now, and we can speak frankly to each other as only true friends can.

Colin Powell published this op-ed article in Russian newspaper Izvestiya on Monday. It is short and well worth the read -- Powell at his best.

Ex-Inspector Says CIA Missed Disarray in Iraqi Arms Program
Topic: Current Events 10:27 am EST, Jan 26, 2004

In general, Dr. Kay said, the CIA and other agencies failed to recognize that Iraq had all but abandoned its efforts to produce large quantities of chemical or biological weapons after the first Persian Gulf war, in 1991.

Mr. Hussein would send Mr. Aziz manuscripts of novels he was writing, even as the American-led coalition was gearing up for war.

"Unscom was like crack cocaine for the CIA."

Digging for Weapons
Topic: International Relations 12:36 am EST, Jan 26, 2004

We had questions that needed to be answered.

What was it: 500 tons, 100 tons or zero tons?

Was it so many liters of anthrax, 10 times that amount, or nothing?

What we demanded of Iraq was that they account for all of this and they prove the negative of our hypothesis."

Just listen.
