ZyXEL Prestige 2000W - VoIP Wi-Fi Phone
Topic: PC Hardware 10:46 am EST, Mar 12, 2004

] The Prestige 2000W VoIP Wi-Fi phone, compatible with IEEE
] 802.11b wireless standard, is a perfect solution for
] Voice over IP applications. It allows users to make or
] receive phone calls as long as they are in the coverage
] of IEEE 802.11b or 11g wireless Access Points. By using
] the Prestige 2000W, users no longer have to pay expensive
] communication fees and can enjoy the convenience of
] wireless mobility.

[ Some pretty non-wack techmology, imho. Neat stuff. -k]

Slashdot | Cheap Linux Tablets, And (Maybe) An Apple Tablet
Topic: PC Hardware 11:52 am EST, Dec  2, 2003

action on the tablet front.

this is, of course, rampant speculation, but fun to think about... if anyone can make a tablet that's cool, it's apple. i personally think it has a lot of uses for people that aren't nerds (in my day job as a consultant, i'd love a tablet for meetings where typing on a laptop would be inappropriate).

for it to succeed, at least for me, it better be ~ 1 inch thick, and the battery better last 5+ hours. hey, i never said i had reasonable requests.

Microsoft buffs up its Media Center | CNET News.com

] "You never quite get the (consumer electronics)
] experience," Kay said. "That's always my critique of
] media center. It's still ultimately a Swiss Army knife,
] rather than a katana (a Japanese sword)."

thoughts on media center systems? I have mixed feelings on this. On the one hand, closed systems and drm are kinda wack, and i tend to disapprove of convergence, for much the same reason as Mr. Kay indicates above. The right tool for one specific job it a well tested philosophy which i tend to agree with, no matter how much ghettohacking or jerry-rigging i may do.

However, we've got our TiVo playing mp3's on the normal home stereo, and i kinda like it. Arguably it's lame to have to have the TV on to control your mp3 player... perhaps we should've bought a sliMP3 device instead.

Anyway, the market will decide just how much convergence is good i suppose...
