How Electronics Are Penetrating North Korea's Isolation
Topic: International Relations 9:10 am EST, Mar 15, 2005

Mr. Kim ordered the formation of a special prosecutor's office last November to arrest people who deal in South Korean goods, largely videotapes, or who use South Korean expressions or slang.

Shh!!! The grammar police will hear you!

There are a lot of messages in this bottle.

The Geo-Green Alternative
Topic: International Relations 6:12 pm EST, Jan 30, 2005

I am a geo-green. The geo-greens believe that if we put all our focus on reducing the price of oil, we will force more reform than by any other strategy. You give me $18-a-barrel oil and I will give you political and economic reform from Algeria to Iran.

It is that simple.

Beating the retreat on democracy
Topic: International Relations 7:22 pm EST, Dec 26, 2004

Torn between the demands of realpolitik and its vision of changing the world, Bush’s team is consistently opting for compromises on both.

For any foreign policy to be effective it must be credible. Bush's mantra of promoting democracy is one of those policies that simply will not be credible if allies such as General Musharraf are allowed to redefine democracy.

'We'
Topic: International Relations 7:14 pm EST, Dec 26, 2004

I would like to radicalize the discussion by proffering a thesis so contrarian in the current context that I should probably begin by asking readers’ indulgence. It is this:

There are no fundamental disagreements or differences between the United States and Europe.

Existing differences are often more apparent than real. When real, the differences are in all consequential cases actually agreements to disagree. And in any case, the views of Americans and Europeans have been converging for some time and will continue to do so.

Hating America
Topic: International Relations 7:11 pm EST, Dec 26, 2004

Fukuyama was right when he noted that the collapse of the Soviet Union also meant the collapse of the great ideological debate on how to organize economic and political life.

There is always a market for an ideology of discontent.

Good News From the Arab World
Topic: International Relations 7:06 pm EST, Dec 26, 2004

What is most likely is an increasing divide in the Arab world between the small, nimble states on the periphery—the gulf states, Jordan, Morocco—and the slumbering giants.

Competition will force each state to focus on its own future.

Beyond the Rim
Topic: International Relations 9:49 am EST, Dec 14, 2004

China is now powerful and influential enough to make American world dominance inconceivable. And in the longer term, China is bent upon and will achieve gross military and economic parity with the United States.

China is methodically following the example of Meiji Japan.

Though the dangers of epidemics and terrorist nuclear attacks are now obviously pre-eminent, rising behind them is a newer world yet.

Unfortunately, it is in our nature neither to foresee nor prepare for what lies beyond the rim.

India starts to look beyond Pakistan
Topic: International Relations 9:44 am EST, Dec 14, 2004

India is courting, and being courted.

The country is beginning to escape its preoccupation with Pakistan.

... complicated by America's arms sales to Pakistan and its support for General Pervez Musharraf's bogus democracy ...

The Idea of Pakistan
Topic: International Relations 8:36 pm EST, Dec 12, 2004

This book was mentioned earlier this year. It is now on sale, and the first chapter is available here.

... a panoramic portrait of this complex country ...

The Idea of Pakistan will be an essential tool for understanding this critically important country.

"Solid, comprehensive, informative, insightful, well-written, provocative, gripping, highly perceptive, thorough, balanced, intelligent. A must read."

In recent years, Pakistan has become a strategically important state. The 9/11 final report identifies Pakistan as a high-priority state.

Unfortunately, the US knows remarkably little about this country. Much of what has been written is palpably wrong, or at best superficial.
