Singaporeans are ushering in this year's Lunar New Year with "lucky undies" emblazoned with monkey cartoon characters and traditional red prosperity characters, the Straits Times reports.

Now, where in SF can I get red "funky monkey" lucky underpants?

An Open Letter to Miramax
Topic: Miscellaneous 5:10 pm EST, Jan  7, 2004

This is an open letter to Miramax from Kung Fu Cult Cinema that has been prompted by events this week concerning a Cease and Desist letter that Miramax sent to Kung Fu Cinema for the reason posting a link to where the original version of Hero could be bought online.

Miramax tries to limit the spread of information about legal imports of international DVD's.

High times in magic mushroom business - and it's perfectly legal
Topic: Miscellaneous 1:03 pm EST, Jan  7, 2004

The Aztecs dubbed them "the flesh of the gods", Siberian shamans used them to enlighten their path to the spirit world, and they were the preserve of hippies and the pioneers of the psychedelic movement in the 1960s. But now magic mushrooms are at the centre of a new - and legal - retail boom.

I had originally posted this with a flippant remark about there unfortunately not being simmilar loophole in US law.

But on a more serious note, halucinogens, pot, and even ecstasy present only limited threats to public health, while the US govrnment has been slow to respond to the recent wave of prescription drug abuse that has come with the rise of oxycontin.

The RIAA makes everyone a cypherpunk
Topic: Miscellaneous 2:20 pm EST, Dec 19, 2003

In response to the RIAA's suits, users who want to share music files are adopting tools like WINW and BadBlue, that allow them to create encrypted spaces where they can share files and converse with one another. As a result, all their communications in these spaces, even messages with no more commercial content than "BRITN3Y SUX!!!1!" are hidden from prying eyes. This is not because such messages are sensitive, but rather because once a user starts encrypting messages and files, it's often easier to encrypt everything than to pick and choose. Note that the broadening adoption of encryption is not because users have become libertarians, but because they have become criminals; to a first approximation, every PC owner under the age of 35 is now a felon.

Truth About Rave
Topic: Miscellaneous 2:10 pm EST, Dec  5, 2003

If you are involved in Raves you are in great spiritual danger. Raves are ungodly environments rampant with sin. Flee this lifestyle, repent and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ before it is eternally too late !!

I have no love for bad house music and pink fur pants... but this is ridiculous.

Electronic music, and dancing, and ecstasy and all that, are what they are. Each person's spirituality is what it is. And personally, if there is a God, I don't believe that he/she who would create a world so beautiful and full of cool stuff, if he/she had intended us not to enjoy it. And if that was his/her intention, then I don't believe sutch a petty and asshole-ish God deserves to be worshiped.

Hrm. I hadn't intended to get on my soapbox, but this is something I feel strongly about, so I'm leaving it there.

'Morning-after pill' over the counter? FDA considers it
Topic: Miscellaneous 2:55 pm EST, Nov 25, 2003

Federal health officials are debating whether it's time to put emergency contraception — the so-called "morning-after pill" — on pharmacy shelves right next to the aspirin, available without a prescription.

This is huge and important for a number of reasons:

1) Emergency Contraception needs to be taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. And the sooner the better. Being able to run to the store right after you realize the condom broke beats the pants out of calling your doctor's office, getting them to call in a prescription the next morning, etc.

2) Although formally a teenager's medical records are not accessable to their parents, it isn't always possible to call up the family doctor without parents finding out. And getting out to the drug store is much easier to explain than trying to get to Planned Parenthood or another community health clinic.

Stories of Krishna: The Adventures of a Hindu God
Topic: Miscellaneous 1:57 pm EST, Nov 14, 2003

Who is Krishna? Why is he blue? And why do women find him so attractive? Step into his world and join the adventures of a Hindu god.

This interactive web site allows you to explore a selection of the paintings featured in the exhibition Painted Visions from India and Pakistan, Past and Present.

This is quite possibly the single most beautiful and effective online flash-based "museum exhibit" I have seen yet. This is what Flash is truly capable of.
