Fear, loathing, guns: at home with King Gonzo
Topic: Current Events 8:31 pm EST, Feb 22, 2005

He had dropped his bad-boy act by 5am. He was a romantic, he admitted. “I’m a great aficionado of being in love.” What frightened him, I wanted to know. “Frightens me?” he echoed in his gruff voice. “I’ve answered that before . . . I’m trying to remember what I said.” Just tell the truth, I told him.

“Ohh,” he groaned. “Growing old. And helpless.”

I am generally not one of those people that gets all weepy about celebrities dying. But this one was like a kick in the gut.

U.S. uses napalm gas in Fallujah – Witnesses
Topic: Current Events 1:56 am EST, Dec  1, 2004

The U.S. military is secretly using banned napalm gas and other outlawed weapons against civilians in the Iraqi city of Fallujah, eyewitnesses reported.

I'm waiting to see this other places before I start really getting upset. But if it's proven true, oh my God will I be upset.

There is no excuse, *none*, for burning people alive. Not even the "war on terror." At least shooting people puts them out of their misery. Burning people alive is inhuman in a way I can't even begin to understand.

On Saturday, Labor MPs have demanded that British Prime Minister confront the Commons over the use of the deadly gas in Fallujah.

Even considering the accusatory culture of the British House of Commons, this makes me even more suspicious that there is evidence to back up these reports.

I don't know if I want to cry or scream.

Andy Kaufman Returns After 20 Years
Topic: Current Events 6:34 pm EDT, May 19, 2004

Twenty years ago, on May 16, 1984, most of the world believed that we had lost a comedic legend forever. This has turned out to be what will inevitably be known as the greatest comic prank ever conceived. Andy Kaufman, by all accounts, is alive and well at age 55 and is now living in New York City on the upper west side. To his loyal supporters and fans, Andy says "sorry about faking my death," in a recent interview with ABC News at his apartment. In order to reach legendary comic status and seal his place in the history of performance art, he said it was "necessary to go away for twenty years."

This isn't a real article, just a press release... and it smells like a stunt. But wow, if it was true...

] something. Over there, they're hunting Iraqis."

A portrait of West Virginia...

Milosevic 'as petulant as ever'
Topic: Current Events 2:16 pm EST, Dec 16, 2003

In an unprecedented agreement between the court and the US, Washington will be allowed to review Mr Clark's testimony before it is made public.

The US will have two days to apply for parts of the testimony to be removed from the public record if it considers them harmful to US national interests.

This is refering to the testamony of former Nato commander Wesley Clark in front of the United Nations war crimes tribunal in The Hague. They're currently trying Slobodan Milosevic.

I'm wondering what the US is afraid he's going to say. For that matter how the hell they managed to arange for this "unprecedented agreement"?

It's the Commitment, Stupid - How to sell gay marriage. By William Saletan
Topic: Current Events 3:57 pm EST, Nov 20, 2003

] Homosexuality can be separated from marriage in roughly
] the same way. Marriage is a broadly shared American
] value. You don't have to support homosexuality to support
] marriage. A politician can say, "I'm pro-marriage. The
] issue isn't whether you're straight or gay. The issue is
] whether you support marriage."

This is a fantastic article for anyone interested in the political ramifications of the Mass. ruling concerning gay marriage. A clear way for liberals to win the argument.

Pornographer says he bought nude Jessica Lynch photos; calls her 'a good kid'
Topic: Current Events 2:30 pm EST, Nov 11, 2003

Pornographer Larry Flynt says he bought nude photos of Pfc. Jessica Lynch last month to publish in Hustler magazine, but changed his mind because she is a "good kid ... and a victim of the Bush administration."

I originally couldn't figure Larry Flynt's motivation, but in light of Jessica Lynch's recent objections to her story being used as propaganda by the Bush administration, I can see Flynt being amused the fact that Hustler magazine is showing more restraint and respect for Lynch than the goverment.

In fact, I'm laughing too.
