I'm a moderate to liberal Democrat. Conservative Republicans are often a mystery to me.

Foreigners See U.S. as 'Greedy Bully'
Topic: Current Events 5:00 pm EDT, Sep  8, 2002

"While the president was moving to address Congress's concerns about his foreign policy, his secretary of state was getting booed Wednesday at an international conference in Johannesburg, South Africa.

~~~~~~~~
As the United States debates going it almost alone against Iraq, the question of whether anti-U.S. views are on the rise is more than academic. State Department officials are sufficiently concerned about growing anti-American sentiment in Europe and Russia, as well as the Middle East, that they have invited a select group of scholars to address the topic at a private conference that started this past Thursday. L.A. Times Fingers Rival in Tupac Shakur's Murder
Topic: Music 4:37 pm EDT, Sep  8, 2002
"Six years after rapper Tupac Shakur was killed in an unsolved drive-by shooting in Las Vegas, the Los Angeles Times on Friday identified his arch-rival, Notorious B.I.G., as a key player in the crime. "
Sounds like a movie plot.
White House: Bush misstated report on Iraq
Topic: Current Events 4:12 pm EDT, Sep  8, 2002
" Seeking to build a case Saturday that Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was developing weapons of mass destruction, President Bush cited a satellite photograph and a report by the U.N. atomic energy agency as evidence of Iraq's impending rearmament. But in response to a report by NBC News, a senior administration official acknowledged Saturday night that the U.N. report drew no such conclusion, and a spokesman for the U.N. agency said the photograph had been misinterpreted."
Father kills virgin over sex claims (September 08, 2002)
Topic: Miscellaneous 4:05 pm EDT, Sep  8, 2002
"A Jordanian father who suspected his daughter of having sex before marriage promised police he wouldn't harm her - then shot her dead.
An autopsy later revealed the 17-year-old girl was still a virgin.
~~~~~~~~

The latest killings follow a Jordanian cabinet ruling last December to exempt those accused of "honour" killings from heavy sentences such as death. "

Report: Federal Agencies Wasted $19 Billion Last Year
Topic: United States 10:08 pm EDT, Sep  7, 2002

"A half-dozen of the largest federal agencies squandered $19 billion through erroneous payments last year, and the total amount wasted is probably far greater, congressional auditors said Friday. "

White House: No Link Between Iraq Policy, Oil Price
Topic: Current Events 4:31 pm EDT, Sep  7, 2002

"The White House said on Friday that President Bush's decision on whether to use military force to remove Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein would not be influenced by the effect such an attack would have on the price of crude oil or on the American economy.

(White House spokesman Ari Fleischer) urged Congress to pass a pending energy bill that the White House hopes would allowing drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska.

The Bush administration wants to tap the refuge's potential 16 billion barrels of oil to help reduce U.S. reliance on foreign crude from unfriendly countries like Iraq. "

In a world-wide oil market, which is what we have, 16 billion barrels of oil would last less than a year (world demand is about 76.4 million barrels per day, out of 16 billion, equals about 209 days). Is it really worth it to risk ruining the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska? Why not look to the future and try to reduce U.S. reliance on ANY crude oil?

I seriously doubt the proposed war against Iraq, like the last Gulf war, has "nothing to do with oil".

Fuel For the Anti-Bush Fire
Topic: Current Events 4:15 pm EDT, Sep  7, 2002

"While many of us enjoy blissful vacation days at the beach, we're being bombarded by messaging from technology and other big corporations claiming not only that they have the means to eradicate global warming and other problems, but also that these problems would have been resolved long ago if not for the extreme environmentalists. "

The Brutal War on Medical Marijuana
Topic: Health and Wellness 4:12 pm EDT, Sep  7, 2002

"The war on drugs is making a comeback -- with a vengeance. Six days short of the Sept.11 anniversary, D.E.A. agents put federal tax dollars to work by raiding the Wo/Men's Alliance for Medical Marijuana (better known as WAMM), a Santa Cruz County, Calif.-based cooperative and one of the most successful medicinal marijuana programs in the nation. The Cheesification of 9-11-02
Topic: Current Events 10:35 pm EDT, Sep  5, 2002

"Are you the kind of person who believes that attaching a plastic American flag to your SUV makes a major patriotic statement? If so, you're no doubt anticipating the looming anniversary of the September 11 attacks with the enthusiasm of a nine-year-old on Christmas morning.

Then there's the rest of us.

Don't get the rest of us wrong. We love America too. But we are understandably tense as we approach what is likely to be the greatest orgy of cheesy sentimentality, naked political opportunism and rank corporate necrophilia in this country's history. "
