outerz0ne is bad for the hacking community
Topic: Technology 10:08 pm EST, Feb  1, 2006

Please don't support seperationist movements like outerz0ne whose only goal is to make trouble instead of letting everyone have a good time.

If you don't like rockit personally, or don't like interz0ne, there is one simple thing that you should do.... DON'T GO! Don't support him or the con. It's that simple.

I cannot figure out for the life of me what anyone hopes to accomplish by going to a conference with the intent of ruining it. Start your own conference! Don't go to interz0ne. Grow a pair and stand up and say "I don't like rockit or interz0ne" and then get on with life. But going to cause trouble does nothing but further seperate this community.

Tell me one good thing that can be accomplished from this. Make interz0ne stop so that we lose a conference? Cause a further rift in the community that has completely turned on itself? Create yet more drama and push the actual hacking content even further away? What am I missing here?

What positive outcome can come of this? The only thing I can see is starting another competing conference, so if that is the goal, then STFU and do it! Otherwise GTFO out of my way so that I (and everyone else) can enjoy interz0ne!

shameful...absolutely shameful....

I didn't mean for that to come across as though it started at the time of the IPO. To clarify, I am saying that the IPO itself inserts the shareholder factor which could lead to the abuse of the data that has been captured all along. As soon as the profits start to fall, that data will be the first thing to be sold IMHO.

Before that it was still bad, but less impending.

This is a BIG red herring. They are not giving you your entire search history. They are giving you a limited amount of the actual data that they collect. You can turn this feature off, or pause it, or leave it active. But know that the fact of the matter is that they collect much more data on you than this leads you to believe.

I posted about this on slashdot recently: http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=146731&cid=12292095

And the discussion went further in the binrev forums: http://www.binrev.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=12014

I really think everyone should read them both to see the facts behind the story.

Just in case anyone was interested, I talked about this onm episode 80 of BRR (http://radio.binrev.com) in regards to the new Microsoft anti-spyware download and the new "Genuine" program where all windows copies must be "Microsoft Authentic" to download apps and updates.

HackTV special episode 1: PWNED
Topic: Technology 1:45 am EST, Jan 15, 2005

] While doing the editing for episode 2 of HackTV, I had
] some footage that didn't really fit in with the regular
] episodes of HackTV but it was too good to leave out!
] Instead of watching it rot on my hard drive, I put
] together a special episode called "PWNED" and you might
] be wondering why"
]
]
] You see, I was fortunate enough to attend The Phreaknic 8
] conference in Nashville Tenessee in October of 2004.
] While there I played a little prank on some of the guys
] in DDP (and one person who became "collateral damage")
] and that is exactly what this episode is about. It is
] about 8.5 minutes long and I didn't want to spend that
] much of the real HackTV episode on a prank, so I thought
] it was a great reason to make a special episode. It will
] also give you something to help pass the time until
] episode 2.
]
]
] So you can find this episode, and all episodes of HackTV
] over at the official HackTV site. We hope you enjoy it
] and spread the word!

A little phun from phreaknic 8 that I knew some of the members of memestreams might enjoy.

The Docs have been Dropped!
Topic: Technology 11:16 pm EST, Jan  4, 2005

] On Tuesday, January 4th BlackRatchet and I released our
] latest project on the unsuspecting internet world.
] DocDroppers is a hacking library of sorts. On it, you
] will find not only all of the texts from myself and the
] DDP, but any and all text files from the world of
] hacking. People have attempted collections like this
] before, but ours is much different.
]
]
] DocDroppers (or DD for short) is different for a number
] of reasons. First and foremost, it is organized and well
] maintained. We have started and maintained many projects
] and understand what an undertaking it is to maintain
] projects for a period of time. We know full well the time
] that would be needed to keep this site alive and we did
] our best to minimize the time needed to maintain it, but
] still be prepared to give it the time that it requires.

Our other large project announcement is here! I really think this could be huge, and I hope that some of the people here will enjoy DocDroppers.org as much as I will.

] Greetings everybody,
]
]
] As you have probably noticed, we have often had
] downtimes. This was because it was so hard to keep this
] site up!
]
] But now we are sorry to inform you all, that SuprNova is
] closing down for good in the way that we all know it.
]
] We do not know if SuprNova is going to return, but it is
] certainly not going to be hosting any more torrent links.
]
] We are very sorry for this, but there was no other way,
] we have tried everything.
]
]
] Thank you all that helped us, by donating mirrors or
] something else, by uploading and seeding files, by
] helping people out on IRC and on forum, by spreading the
] word about SuprNova.org.
]
] It is a sad day for all of us!
]
]
] Please visit SuprNova.org every once in a while to get
] the latest news on what is happening and if there is
] anything new to report on.
]
]
] As we wish to maintain the nice comunity that we created,
] we are keppig forums and irc servers open.
]
]
] Thank you all and Goodbye!
]
] sloncek & the rest of the SuprNova Team

I don't know if anyone was into this. I didn't really visit it frequently, but it was just a matter of time before they got shut down like the others. I do not know the back story, whether they went down due to bandwidth trouble or because of that recent ruling about the liability of bittorrent seeders. I suspect the latter.

] It is has been a long time coming, but we have finally
] gotten DDP HackRadio up and running! Click here to listen
] to our new 24/7 hacking radio station.

Check out http://radio.binrev.com for more information. We have a schedule and rotation of show that is already pretty full and we are adding many things as we go along. Expect to hear talk shows, independant music, conference presentations, and some other surprise things to be announced soon.

If you are like me and listen to a lot of talk radio, you now have a central resource for hacking related material. I hope someone enjoys it.

Another News Site? Sounds vaguely familiar...
Topic: Technology 10:20 am EST, Dec  6, 2004

] What is digg?
]
] Digg is a technology news website that gives editorial
] control back to the community. Most technology websites
] allow users to suggest content by submitting links or
] stories to an editor. If the editor believes the story
] to be relevant to the masses, he or she moves the story
] to the homepage. With digg, users also submit links for
] review. But rather than allowing an editor to decide
] which links go on the homepage, the users do.
]
]
] How does digg work?
]
] Lets start off by looking at the diagram below. (1) The
] user submits a story to the "hardware" category. (2) The
] story is then filed into the "dig" area of hardware. (3)
] Users on the site see the story, and several of them
] click "dig this story" - giving the article 15 digs. (4)
] Due to it's popularity, digg removes the story from the
] dig area, and promotes it to the home and category pages.

I thought Decius might find this interesting in its approach. I got to it after a few clickthroughs from some other irrelevant story on slashdot.

Another News Site? Sounds vaguely familiar...
